Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings, SoCo family!

I have lots to share this week about the success our student body is experiencing in various settings. Let’s get to it!

Our 2023 Prom was last Saturday, May 20 at the Westwood Country Club. It was a FANTASTIC night, as our students were dressed in their formal wear, behaved EXCEPTIONALLY well, and danced into the night. It brought real joy to my heart to see how happy the students were throughout the night. Here are just a few of the many pictures taken that night.

Next, our SoCo Crew team has taken success to another level, as they medaled at the largest high school regatta in the world! Yes, THE WORLD! SoCo Crew had 41 boats in timed trials, and our J-8 team took 3rd! That’s so impressive!

The boys J-8 also made finals; they came in 6th, and although they didn't win, they set a personal record for their boat's time, so they extraordinarily well.

I’m so proud of these athletes for representing our community at this high of a level!

One of the highlights of my week with instruction took place in Ms. Huffman’s Entrepreneurship class. She facilitated a “Shark Tank” student project in which students worked in pairs or alone to develop, market, and sell their products. If they could get the Shark (judges) to buy in, then they earned points on their projects. The creativity, energy, and passion that the students brought to these projects was second to none!

This past Wednesday we had a special athletic signing program for our athletes who are committed to a college or university. We had more than 30 student-athletes declared the sport they committed to play at the collegiate level. I have worked at two high schools before coming to FCPS, and I’ve NEVER seen this high a quality of recognition or this high a number of athletes playing at the collegiate level. That afternoon left me saying three words: Wow! Wow! Wow!

The College Partnership Program ceremony was this past Thursday afternoon. This is a county-wide program, and our program is in the top five of the 26 high schools in terms of the number of students who successfully complete the program. At the ceremony, seniors were called up to be corded and receive their recognition. Afterwards, students were able to enjoy a whole host of refreshments. Again, seeing these outstanding students receive their well-deserved recognition was truly special.

Have a great holiday weekend!

From the Library

As the school year winds down, please ask your student(s) to check their FCPS Google email on Monday mornings for reminders of overdue library books.

Printed notices will be distributed through English classes during the week of June 5th.  All library books need to be returned to the library by June 2nd. Seniors must clear their library records before picking up their cap and gown.

If a library book has been lost, students will need to pay the replacement cost listed on the reminder notice. The library can only accept exact cash for lost library books from seniors, but can also accept checks from underclassmen.

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after the last day of school will be destroyed.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian, with the exception of over the counter medications such as Tylenol or Motrin; all other medications cannot be sent home with your student.  If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by FCPS, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

For questions, call the heath room at (703) 446-1610, or email zfindley1@fcps.edu School Health Aid.
