Family Newsletter May 22, 2023

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

We are on the home stretch with four remaining weeks of school. It is important to make sure your child attends school every day for the remainder of the school year if not sick. Cameron’s chronic absenteeism rate is 15% of our student body. The goal is to have less than 10% so that our accreditation will not be impacted due to attendance which is measured by the state.

As an incentive, I started a raffle last Friday May 19th for those students that were present for the entire week to possibly win Principal of the Day. This information was shared on Cameron’s Morning News Show. Our first winner was named on Friday, May 19th, and students will have three other opportunities to win. Our first winner will shadow me on Wednesday May 24th. We will have three other raffles on May 26th, June 2nd and June 9th.

Again, the students must be present every day during the week to be eligible for the Friday raffle for Principal of the Day. So let’s make sure our students get to school and be with us until June 16th. Even though we are approaching the end of the school year, learning is still occurring every day. Please reach out to Leah Donlin, School Registrar lpdonlin@fcps.edu or Susana Trupo, Family Liaison smtrupo@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Eric T. Johnson

Principal

Staff Spotlight of the Week

Hi Cameron families! My name is Jillian Tiwana and I am a 4th grade teacher. This is my sixth year at Cameron and tenth year of teaching. I began teaching 5th grade in Brooklyn, NY but have been so happy being a part of the Cameron family! I attended school in New York City at Marymount Manhattan College and New York University. NYC is still one of my favorite places to visit! Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, visiting art museums, reading, and hiking with our dog, Andes. This summer, we are very excited to welcome our first child!

Tutoring Grants Available for Families

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is now accepting applications from parents for tutoring microgrants for their children through the K-12 Learning Acceleration Grants program.

The program was created to help Virginia families address the impact of the pandemic on student learning. It provides $1,500 grants to parents of school-age children for tutoring in specific subjects. Children from homes with family incomes at 300% or less of the federal poverty level may qualify for $3,000 grants.

Available services include in-person, online, and hybrid tutoring provided one-on-one or in small group or large group settings. The first step in the process is to visit VDOE’s K-12 Learning Acceleration Grants page and create an application account.
