Spirit Day for This Week

Mental Health

May is Wear Green for Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a time to raise awareness of and reduce the stigma surrounding behavioral health issues, as well as highlight the ways in which mental illness and addiction can affect all of us – individuals, families, and our society at large.  Key Center staff and students are invited to wear GREEN on Friday, May 19th to participate in this observance.

We had a wonderful Staff Appreciation week!  Thank you to our PTA and families for making us feel so appreciated with a fun, movie-themed celebration.  We were treated to movie concession-style treats, a fabulous box lunch, a yummy breakfast, contests, prizes, notes of appreciation, and gifts!  Thank you very much Key Center community!

Mentoring

Getting support from someone who's been in your shoes can make a difference! The Center for Family Involvement is recruiting culturally and linguistically diverse parents and/or primary caregivers to volunteer as Family Navigators. Family Navigators are parents and primary caregivers who are currently supporting (or have supported) a family member with a developmental disability or special health care need.

Learn more about the Family Navigator Program on the Center for Family Involvement’s website.

First Responder & Safety Fair

First Responders

Years of data tell us that people with disabilities are more likely to encounter law enforcement than typically developing peers, and more likely to struggle to navigate that interaction. We’re here to help you get ready for any police interactions so you feel safer and readier, and to give officers a chance to learn directly from people with disabilities and their families. The idea of interacting with police officers can feel intimidating, especially if you or your loved ones have a disability. One of the best ways to manage that anxiety and prepare yourself for a successful real world interaction is to practice!  Click here for more information or to register for the First Responder & Safety Resource Fair.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO) Event

Metro

Representatives from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO) will be on site at the Arc of Northern Virginia’s Falls Church office on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023 from 12:00- 1:30PM to take photos and process applications for the Reduced Fare Program.  They will also take photos and accept applications for the MetroAccess Door to Door Paratransit Program.

These are two separate programs, with separate application forms.  Please take the time to understand which program you want to access, and understand the application process.  THIS CAN BE COMPLICATED if you do not take the time to read and understand.  We want to make this as easy for you as possible on the date of the event. But that can only happen if you come properly prepared.  Click here for more information or to register for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO) Event.

Key Center Learns about Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Asian American

People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions.  Students at Key Center have been learning about the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through a variety of lessons across multiple settings in the school this month.
