AVID graduation

Message from the Director

Dear Atom Nation,

Last week we celebrated the AVID Class of 2023 with a special ceremony. We are so proud of the hard work and dedication of these students. While some joined AVID just this year, many have been members of the program for several years. It was exciting to see the many pathways they will be taking in the future! We cannot wait to see what they accomplish!

A big congratulations to Thien Phan and Uswa Tariq, who participated in a rigorous selection process amongst high-achieving and talented students in the Commonwealth. Thien will be attending Governor’s School for Visual and Performing Art (Instrumental Music) at Radford University. Uswa will be attending Governor’s School for Humanities, also at Radford University. We are proud that Thien and Uswa will be representing AHS at their respective programs.

Next week begins exam week for our seniors. Seniors are required to attend and sit for all of their exams. The exam schedule is below. For all information related to seniors closing out the school year, please check out the Class of 2023 page on our website.

No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for Students Starting April 10: FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to begin offering virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Starting Monday, April 10, parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior will be able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist. Teletherapy services for students are short-term, evidence-based, and culturally-responsive. Teletherapy is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Therapists will be locally-licensed clinicians; 50% of whom identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC); and 40% of whom are bilingual. More than 15 languages are available. Hazel Health’s licensed therapists can help students who are experiencing: mood/behavior changes, lack of motivation, grief/loss, anxiety, worry, fears, bullying, sexual identity challenges, challenging peer and family relationships, academic stress.
