May 29, 2023
Dear Willow families,
These past several weeks have been full of learning, music, creativity, and fun! Our teachers continue to guide WSES students in new and unique ways of learning, such as math egg hunts, review games with black lights, Positivity Project lessons, a joyful 2023 Spring Chorus Concert, and more!
A special shout-out and congratulations to our talented 5th and 6th graders that participated in the WSES Spring Chorus Concert! The beautiful music included vocals and musical pieces featuring cellos and additional instruments to catch the audience's attention. Thank you to Ms. Berra and Ms. Young for making these special events happen at WSES.
At the end of every year, the sixth graders participate in a service project by providing much-needed food items to Western Fairfax Christian Ministry. In addition to collecting non-perishables, they also focus on "kid food" to ensure that kids in need enjoy fun foods such as fruit cups, pop tarts, and ravioli. Our sixth graders are involved in every step of the process, from advertising to collecting and delivery. The drive officially kicked off Friday and will continue through the last week of school. All WSES students are encouraged to donate!
Finally, the PTA Silent Auction is happening now until Friday, June 2nd. Bid for fun experiences with your teacher, be a teacher for a day, be the principal or assistant principal for the day, go bowling with your teacher, get front-row seats to concerts and the 6th-grade promotions, and so much more! Bid away! Click here to learn more and start your bidding!
We look forward to 3 more fabulous weeks of school! Please reach out with any questions you might have.
Thank you,
Dylan Taylor, Principal
Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal
Ipsa Stringer, Assistant Principal

What's Happening at WSES?
A huge shout out to our 5th and 6th-grade Chorus students. What a wonderful evening of music for our families. Thank you to Ms. Berra and Ms. Young for fostering a love for music in our children.
On May 5 and 6, fifty-one strings and band students represented our school at District 11’s Solo & Ensemble Festival at Stone Middle School. The students spent weeks practicing solo, duet, trio, and quartet music independently. They then performed in front of a judge, who gave them a rating and helpful feedback on their playing. All the Willow Springs students received Superior or Excellent, the highest two ratings at the festival! We are so proud of our talented musicians for their perseverance, collaboration, and dedication to improving their instruments. Keep up the great practice!
WSES hosted the Positivity Project's co-founder Jeff Bryan and his team members. The P2 Team engaged in morning meeting activities with kindergarten and 6th-graders and painted rocks with 2nd-graders. We showcased our P2 Library, morning news show, and P2 Rock Garden. They even participated in meaningful discussions with 4th and 6th graders in our Willow Waves podcast studio. #PositivityInAction
2nd and 3rd-grade students painted and added rocks to our P2 Rock Garden. Each year students and staff determine their top Positivity Project strength. In doing this, connections happen, and conversations spark.
The launch of our salad bar was a success! Students continue to fill their plates with fresh fruits and vegetables. We love making our plates colorful at WSES!
Thank you to our PTA for supporting our annual Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day!
Several therapy dogs have come through the doors of WSES. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with our four-legged friends.
Congratulations to our adopt-a-school partners! The George Mason Softball team won the 2023 A-10 Championship! The team traveled to Regionals in Durham, NC, where they unfortunately lost. We are so proud of Mason and cannot wait to see how far they will go next year! #BeDauntless

✅ Student Testing Results Coming Soon
Starting in late May, caregivers will receive reports for assessments their students completed this spring. Not sure what assessments your student took this year? A list of tests by grade level is available. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE, by mail, or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines.
Some families will also receive a Virginia’s Visualization and Analytics Solution (VVAAS) Student Assessment Summary report with historical Standards of Learning (SOL) test results from 2015-2022.
Go online or contact your student's school for additional information about student assessments.
How to Support Your Child’s Success
If you do not already have a SIS ParentVUE account, sign up now to monitor and support your child’s academic success! Through ParentVUE, you are able to view your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. You can also access special reports for your student like progress reports and assessment score reports.
Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE by using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Medication Pickup
The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.
Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your health care provider. Approved over-the-counter medications given for headaches, muscle aches, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps do not need a health care provider’s signature. Antibiotic or antiviral medications for 10 consecutive school days or less do not require a health care provider’s signature either. For all asthma medications, a Virginia Asthma Action Plan must be provided. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form(s).
Over-the-counter medication must be in the unopened original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. No more than 100 pills/tablets of OTC medication should be brought to school at a time. All prescription medication, including samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or health care provider. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time to be given.
Student Intention Form 2023-2024
The Student Intention form 2023-24 is used by FCPS staff to project each school's total enrollment for the next school year. The form only needs to be completed if your child will not be returning to Willow Springs or FCPS next year. Do not complete the form if your student is moving on to an FCPS middle school.
The form can also be found on the Willow Springs Website Homepage.
