We are Better Together!

Dear Island Creek Community,

A heartfelt thank you to our PTA and families for showering the Island Creek Staff with appreciation! The staff loved the delicious treats and sweet cards. An extra special thank you to Corinne Kunkel, who led the PTA’s Staff Appreciation efforts and was at school every day this week!

To continue to instill a love of reading, Island Creek will have a Read-A-Thon from Monday, May 22-Wednesday, May 31! Students will record the number of minutes they read (or are read to) daily. There will be prizes!!

  • Every student who raises at least $10, will receive a croc wristband
  • The student from each class who reads the most minutes, will receive a prize
  • The class and teacher that read the most number of minutes will receive a prize (one lower grade, one upper grade)

Have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy the beautiful weather and time with a good book!

Your Proud Principal,
Jen Fallert

Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input (due Friday, May 12)

Our staff will be starting to create tentative class groupings this spring, with classroom assignments finalized in mid-August.  As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships. Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests. Due to the many factors we must consider in creating classroom placements, including the staffing of our teachers, requests for a specific teacher cannot be honored.

If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete this form by Friday, May 12. There is no need to complete the form if you do not have any information you would like us to consider.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month: May Day, May Day

“May Day” is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice-procedure radio communications. The new 9-8-8 number is a suicide and crisis lifeline, similar to 9-1-1 in a medical/safety emergency. One in six youth, aged 6-17, experience a mental health condition each year. Below are some activities to practice at home for mental wellness.

6 Mental Health Activities for Kids to Practice at Home

  • Create a Journal
    • Younger students are better able to communicate their feelings and emotions freely in a creative way.
  • Practice Gratitude Exercises
    • Have students write notes about what they are grateful for and place it a jar (label it thankful jar)
  • Engage in breathing exercises
    • A couple deep breaths can reset not only your child’s mind
    • Deep breathing exercises and meditation can increase focus and compassion
  • Try music therapy
    • Music can be used to encourage movement and relaxation
  • Use Stress Balls and other sensory toys
