Principal Message

Happy Friday Wolverines!

What a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week!  Thank you to our amazing teachers for all that they do for our kids every day.  Thank you to our amazing students, SGA, support staff, parents, volunteers, and partners like Greg Dushaw of Southside 815, for making the week full of food, fun, and love.

We are closing out AP testing and initial rounds of SOL testing with great success.  If your child was absent and missed an SOL, next week will be a week of make-up testing. Please make sure that they are present at school next week.  We appreciate all the support and grace during the testing season for students and staff.  This time can be very stressful, and your support is invaluable to our overall success.

Together, we will push through to a strong ending to our year.

Let’s Go West Po!!!

Have a great weekend,

Dr. Millard

School News

Congratulations WPHS Students

After a three year hiatus, WPHS students in the Virginia Association of the Technology Student Association (TSA) participated in a three day state leadership conference May 5-7th in Hampton, Virginia. Mr. Franco’s students, Nathaly Umanzor-Manzanares, Ivan Keenan and Jhon Mendoza, won 1st place in the state in the Architectural Design challenge. The 2023 Architectural Design challenge  was to design an assisted living facility for people who need help with daily care. Nathaly led her teammates, Ivan and Jhon, through research to determine and select the level of care and to designed their facility accordingly. This included selecting and identifying the location for the facility, necessary building codes, materials and creating a budget for 24-hour supervision with on-site staff, three meals per day, housekeeping, laundry service and space for social/ recreational activities. Congratulations to Nathaly, Ivan, John and Mr. Franco!

FCPS Middle School News

FCPS has designated funding in the budget for the 2023-24 school year for middle school athletics to support student well-being at no cost to students. Pending budget adoption, this will be the first time FCPS has offered middle school students a chance to participate in extracurricular sports programs.

Middle schools will start with cross country this fall. Track will follow in spring 2024.

Any middle school students who would like to participate in athletics will need to have a Virginia High School League (VHSL) pre-participation examination (PPE). The physical exam form must be completed and signed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. Fairfax County public high schools will offer PPEs at a cost of $50 per student through Saturday, June 17. Students who receive free and reduced-priced meals are eligible to receive an exam at no cost.

Sophomores - Do You Know Your Test Preference?

Most students will show a strong preference for either the SAT or ACT format. This preference usually results in students naturally testing the SAT equivalent of 100 points higher on their preferred test. Sponsored by PTSA, mock tests are offered on campus to help students determine their preferred format and establish baseline test scores – not to mention the benefits of practice. Sophomores can make their junior year less hectic by determining test preference now! Juniors, get a little extra practice before the real thing!

Mock (Practice) Tests – This is it for the school year! No summer events planned.

Walk-In registration for mocks ($28.00) available as space allows. Checks should be payable to WPHS PTSA.

SAT Practice Test Date: 05/13/23, 9:00am - 12:45pm, $23.00 Sign Up ACT Practice Test Date: 05/20/23, 9:15am - 1:30pm, $23.00 Sign Up
