Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input
for the 2023-2024 School Year
As we begin planning for the next school year, one of our most challenging tasks is creating class groupings. It is very important to have balanced classes that reflect the diversity of our students. As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships.
|
If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete this form by Friday, May 12. There is no need to complete the form if you do not have any information you would like us to consider. Requests for specific teachers will not be honored.

May Day May Day
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
“May Day” is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice-procedure radio communications. The new 9-8-8 number is a suicide and crisis lifeline, similar to 9-1-1 in a medical/safety emergency. One in six youth, aged 6-17, experience a mental health condition each year. Below are some activities to practice at home for mental wellness.
Six Mental Health Activities for Kids to Practice at Home
- Create a Journal
- Younger students are better able to communicate their feelings and emotions freely in a creative way.
- Practice Gratitude Exercises
- Have students write notes about what they are grateful for and place it a jar (label it thankful jar)
- Engage in breathing exercises
- A couple deep breaths can reset not only your child’s mind
- Deep breathing exercises and meditation can increase focus and compassion
- Try music therapy
- Music can be used to encourage movement and relaxation
- Use Stress Balls and other sensory toys
How to make a stress ball
What you’ll need:
- 2 balloons
- Small funnel
- Rice, flour, Play-Doh, or Orbeez
Directions:
- Take one balloon and use a small funnel to fill it with rice, flour, Play-Doh, or Orbeez.
- Once the balloon is filled, tie the end to close it.
- Double wrap the balloon into the second balloon to make sure it’s super secured.
How to make slime
What you’ll need:
- A glass bowl
- Spoon or spatula
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of all-purpose solution or contact solution
- 1 cup of washable school glue
- 1 cup of food coloring or glitter (optional)
- A few drops of lavender essential oil (optional)
Directions:
- Mix the washable school glue and food coloring or glitter together in a glass bowl.
- Add in the teaspoon of baking soda. Give it a good mix with a spoon or spatula.
- Add in the all-purpose solution or contact solution. Add each tablespoon one at a time for best results.
- Mix it all together until the slime begins to separate from the sides of the bowl.
- (Optional step) Add in a few drops of lavender essential oil for a calming scent.
- Start kneading the slime in your hands until it’s no longer sticky and stays together.

Social Emotional Learning Screener Reports
Twice a year, students in grades 3-12 share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed through the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.
Spring 2023 SEL Screener results will be mailed to families in mid-May. The Social Emotional Learning Screener Parent/Guardian Report and Guide has been updated to better reflect how SEL Screener results are used to support school and districtwide planning, in addition to supports for individual students. Visit the FCPS SEL Screener webpage for information in multiple languages, including tips for talking with your student about the report and strategies for strengthening SEL at home.

Military Matters - For Our Military Families
Honoring Month of the Military Child at Hayfield Elementary School
I hope you and your student(s) enjoyed celebrating Month of the Military Child here at Hayfield throughout the month of April. We kicked off the month with our Military Families Parent Coffee sponsored by the PTA. Our “Military Child - Wall of Fame” display looked great in the front entry hallway. Thank you to everyone who sent in your military family pictures for the board. The children were excited to point out their pictures and teachers and staff enjoyed the seeing them. My favorite part of the activity was reading the “I am special because …” section. Forms including pictures were sent home today in Thursday Folders.
Another fun activity was our special visit from the JROTC Cadettes from Hayfield Secondary School across the street. The cadettes were in full uniform and featured the Drill Team, Raider Team, Air Rifle Team, and Color Guard. I hope your children enjoyed their performances and learned more about the JROTC program and their mission, “To Motivate Young Children to be Better Citizens”.
Sprit Week featured everyone wearing patriotic colors, camo and lots of purple on Purple Up Day. Finally, we closed out the month with personalized certificates. Each military student received a “Military Child Certificate of Recognition” from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Thank you everyone for your support in making Month of the Military Child a success.
To celebrate the month of the military child, Hayfield Secondary’s JROTC members shared several presentations with our students. Thank you to those who serve and have served!
