Volunteer and Engagement Opportunity Deadlines

Hello, Springfield District,

Please be aware of the upcoming volunteer and engagement opportunity deadlines.

Every two years Fairfax County places a school construction bond referendum on the general election ballot and will again on the November 7, 2023 ballot. I am currently seeking two volunteers to serve as the Springfield District representatives for the 2023 School Bond Referendum Committee. This committee is not an official board council or commission, but rather a group of volunteers led by a volunteer who donates their own time and resources to lead the effort.

Additionally, please consider applying to serve on the School Board’s Audit Committee. The Audit Committee serves as the Board’s liaison with the Office of Auditor General by 1) reviewing the annual audit plan prepared by the Office of Auditor General and submitting its recommendation to the School Board for approval; 2) mediating the auditors’ relationship with management; 3) reviewing audit reports and management responses, and reporting to the Board monthly; 4) following up on the implementation of internal audit recommendations; 5) monitoring progress against the approved annual audit plan; 6) acting as a representative for School Board member requests for ad hoc reviews; 7) periodically reviewing audit-related policies for approval by the Board; and 8) assisting the Board with the evaluation of the auditor general in accordance with Human Resources guidelines, policies, and regulations.

Lastly, if you haven’t already done so, please offer your feedback on FCPS’ draft Strategic Plan goals.

Read below for more information.

All my very best-

Laura Jane

Seeking Springfield District Bond Referendum Committee Members

A citizen’s committee supporting the 2023 School Bond Referendum is forming and seeking volunteers. The committee’s general duties will be sharing information that supports the passage of the bond to HOA boards, chambers of commerce, and other organizations; and distributing information electronically and in print. Along with the distribution of information, the volunteers will be invited to strategize on approaches and execution at 6 to 9 meetings between late May and Election Day, November 7, 2023.  The meetings take place in the Tyson’s Corner Area.

School Board members are accepting names of interested Fairfax County residents. If interested, please contact me at LauraJane.Cohen@fcps.edu, by midnight, Sunday, May 14, 2023.
