Teacher Appreciation Week

This week we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week.  At Kilmer Center School, we are fortunate to have a team of dedicated educators who go above and beyond every day to provide an enriching and supportive learning environment.

We would also like to extend a warm thank you to the following local businesses for their generous donations, which have made Teacher Appreciation Week even more special:

  • Costco Fairfax: Your support has helped us create a memorable celebration for our teachers.
  • Papa John's: Thank you for providing delicious lunches that brought joy to our teachers' day.
  • Chick-fil-A Tyson's West In-Line: Your contribution of scrumptious lunches added a delightful touch to our appreciation festivities.
  • Eggspectation Chantilly: Our teachers started their day on a delicious note, thanks to your generous breakfast donations.
  • Wegmans Tysons: Your kind assistance in making Teacher Appreciation Week a success is greatly appreciated.
  • Harris Teeter - Dunn Loring: Your support helped us create a memorable and fulfilling experience for our teachers.
  • Walmart - Vienna Supercenter: Thank you for your contribution, which made our Teacher Appreciation Week even more remarkable.

We are truly grateful to these businesses for their contributions, which have enhanced our celebrations and demonstrated their commitment to education and our community.

Let's take this opportunity to show our heartfelt appreciation to our amazing educators who make a difference every single day.

nurses day

National School Nurse Day- May 10

National School Nurse Day is Wednesday, May 10. It is a day to recognize the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.  We are so lucky to have Elizabeth Clottey and Janet Stein here at Kilmer Center School.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.

Please join us in thanking the PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.

Community Conversation: School Safety and Security

FCPS will host a community conversation to discuss our approach to safety and security, and the work we do every day to keep our schools safe. Join us Monday, May 8, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at South Lakes High School. Register for the Community Conversation.

FCPS staff and experts will review our risk assessment processes, the physical measures we already have in place to protect our students and staff, pilot programs to detect vaping, and how we communicate and collaborate with our partners when there is an incident at our schools.

An Update on ESSER Funding, and the Proposal for 2023-2024

In the fall of 2021, FCPS received $188.8 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding to support the safe operation of schools and address the impacts of COVID-19 on students.

Last week, Sloan Presidio, FCPS’ chief academic officer, presented the proposed ESSER expenditures for the 2023-24 school year, the last year of ESSER funding. This funding is in addition to the FCPS operating budget and is specifically targeting the impacts of COVID-19.

The proposed plan presented at the recent School Board Meeting is intended to maximize the dollars remaining in our funding. At least 20% of the funding must be spent toward unfinished learning. The proposed plan has nearly 80% of ESSER funds allocated to support student learning needs. Read more about the plan.

We're Presenting Another First Responder & Safety Fair

The April First Responder Safety Fair was a huge hit (as you can see in these photos), and we’re so grateful for our partners in Arlington County, who worked so hard to make the event meaningful and successful. Which is why we're excited to do it all again! This time we're teaming up with Fairfax County first responders and safety staff for a second First Responders & Safety Resource Fair. This event takes place on Saturday, June 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy in Chantilly. This is another chance for our community to meet first responders, to ask questions they have and address their fears, to learn about self-identifying when interacting, and for first responders to see first hand how disabilities may present so they are better prepared to safely respond in the future. All people are welcome to come and learn, share, and feel empowered.
