A Note From Mr. Gates
As we move deeper into May, our testing “season” kicks into full gear. This is our opportunity to capture the results of our hard work this year. Assessments include the end-of-year iReady reading and math assessents for all students in grades 1-6. The Standards of Learning (SOL) tests will begin this week for students in third - sixth grades and continues for the next 3 weeks. Specific testing dates and content areas tested vary from grade to grade and may be found below. If you have a student in grades 3 - 6, please avoid doctors’ appointments and other events that will take students out of school during testing days. Parents often ask how they can help prepare their child for an upcoming assessment. The best preparation is what you do every day: reading with your child and asking questions about the reading (characters, setting, main idea); taking a few minutes to review any preparation materials sent home; ensuring a good night’s rest; eating a healthy breakfast and sending them to school with a positvie attitude.
One of the most important virtues we can instill in our children is that a healthy attitude always begins with being grateful. Next week during Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week and we pay special tribute to our teachers and staff and recognize the lasting contributions they make in our lives. Hollin Meadows is truly blessed to have so many talented and dedicated staff members. I cannot imagine a better team to work alongside than the Hollin Meadows staff and am so grateful for their dedication and expertise! Our fabulous PTA has a number of events planned including:
Monday, May 8th: breakfast bar for the teachers with fresh fruits, yogurts and parfait toppings. If you would like to sign up to donate items for that day, here is the link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050C4FA9A72BABF58-yogurt
Wednesday, May 10th: coffee, doughnuts and pastries for teachers to enjoy. If you would like to donate items for this day, here is the link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050C4FA9A72BABF58-breakfast2
Thursday, May 11th: the PTA will build bouquets to display in every classroom. Students can donate a single stem flower (or more!) that will be collected by a PTA member when they arrive at the entrances. Bouquets will be assembled and given to every teacher.
Friday, May 12: “Dress Like Your Teacher Day”! Students are encouraged to dress like their teacher, staff member or any teacher this day as a way to show their admiration to our staff!
As always, thank you for your continued support of all things Hollin Meadows. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

Say “Thank You!” to Your Favorite Teacher
The first full week of May (May 8 to 12) is Teacher Appreciation Week. You can submit a recorded message thanking and celebrating our school’s amazing teachers and staff.
Your video message may be selected to share with our teachers and community on FCPS’ website and social media channels throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. Surprising our teachers and staff with these messages of gratitude and support is part of the fun, so keep your contribution under wraps until May.
More information and a submission form are available online. Please be aware, the submission form requires a Google account. If you do not have a Google account and wish to be part of the celebration, share your messages on social media and tag FCPS on Facebook or Instagram.

Social Emotional Learning Screener Reports
Twice a year, students in grades 3-12 share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed through the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.
Spring 2023 SEL Screener results will be mailed to families in mid-May. The Social Emotional Learning Screener Parent/Guardian Report and Guide has been updated to better reflect how SEL Screener results are used to support school and districtwide planning, in addition to supports for individual students. Visit the FCPS SEL Screener webpage for information in multiple languages, including tips for talking with your student about the report and strategies for strengthening SEL at home.

FCPS staff and experts will review our risk assessment processes, the physical measures we already have in place to protect our students and staff, pilot programs to detect vaping, and how we communicate and collaborate with our partners when there is an incident at our schools.
