Spring Musical: SOMETHING ROTTEN!
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

End of Year Schedule
Our end-of-the-year schedule with AP, SOL, and Final Exam Information has been published. SOLs will run through May 19. AP testing occurs through May 12. Senior and underclass exams and all the important graduation dates are annotated. You can view the entire schedule on our website.

End of Year Financial Obligations
West Springfield High School will no longer accept checks for payment of activities or obligations through the end of this school year.
Parents and families can make payments via MySchoolBucks, money order or cash.
Attendance Issues
As we approach the end of the year, teachers must continue to take attendance all day, for all students, even on testing days. This means that students are not automatically released for the day after AP Exams or SOL testing.

Say “Thank You!” to Your Favorite Teacher
WSHS will be celebrating our amazing teachers throughout the week of May 8-12. You can submit a recorded message thanking and celebrating our school’s amazing teachers and staff.
Your video message may be selected to share with our teachers and community on FCPS’ website and social media channels throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. Surprising our teachers and staff with these messages of gratitude and support is part of the fun, so keep your contribution under wraps until May.

Special Awards Winner and Recognitions
🕊️ 2023 Student Peace Award
West Springfield senior Muqtader Zahid has been named one of 26 FCPS students to receive the 2023 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County, designed to recognize young people who work as peacemakers.
Every year, the high schools in Fairfax County are asked to select one junior or senior, or a group of students, whose work has promoted peace. The project is organized by volunteers and funded by donations from 17 secular and religious sponsoring organizations. Read about the 2023 recipients.

WSHS Journalism Student Selected for JCamp Summer Cohort
Paula De Megret-Murray was chosen as one of 30 students to attend JCamp (Journalism Camp) from a pool of more than 450 applicants across the United States. Paula will spend a fully funded week at American University to receive hands-on training from professional journalists.

2023 YEARBOOK is Sold Out
The 2023 yearbook has officially sold out and all online sales are now closed. There's a small handful reserved for in-person sales (approx. 30 books), which will be sold on a date TBD, during distribution. In-person yearbooks will cost $80.

Prom 2023
Prom tickets are currently on sale and can be bought through MySchoolBucks for $55 until Wednesday May 10.
Students who plan to invite a non-WSHS guest must turn in a Prom Guest Form to the Activities Office.

No Money Needed for Prom Dress Shop: Until May 7th!
FCPS marketing students from Centreville High School and the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program opened their Prom Dress Shop on Friday, March 24, at Centreville High School. Since 2006, the dress shop has helped hundreds of financially challenged students attend prom in style each spring by providing dresses and accessories at no cost.
Any area student—not just those from Fairfax County Public Schools—who does not have the funds to purchase a prom dress may choose from hundreds of new dresses donated by Macy’s. Students must show a valid student ID, or another form of school identification, to choose a free dress on select days until Sunday, May 7. See the shop hours.

No-Cost Hazel Health Teletherapy for High School Students
At last Thursday’s School Board meeting, Superintendent Reid presented on FCPS’ partnership with Hazel Health to offer teletherapy to high school students at no cost. Hazel’s therapists can help students address:
- Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
- Anxiety, worry, fears
- Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
- Academic stress
How to Access Hazel Health Teletherapy Services
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Have you set up your high school student for free mental health therapy?
In order for high schoolers to participate in teletherapy services, caregivers must complete three steps:
- Give permission for FCPS to share basic demographic information with Hazel in ParentVUE.

Consent for Hazel Mental Health services.
Students must be referred to therapy by a guardian or designated school staff member. You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting an FCPS school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.
🏫Instructional Job Fair
FCPS is searching for educators with strong academic backgrounds and a passion for making a difference. FCPS is hosting an upcoming job fair to meet hiring needs in instructional areas. This is an in-person event that will be held at Lake Braddock Secondary School on Saturday, May 6, 9am - 1pm. Registration is required.
🚍School Bus Driver Job Fair
Join FCPS’ Transportation Team! It’s a great opportunity to earn income with benefits for stay-at-home parents, retirees, college students, or career switchers.
A bus driver job fair will be held Wednesday, May 10, from 10am to 2pm, at Lorton Center. Learn more about the job fairs.
Parent Resource Center is Now the Family Resource Center
FCPS’ Parent Resource Center has changed its name to the Family Resource Center (FRC), as a way to acknowledge and support the broad diversity of families in our community. The FRC continues to offer a wide range of essential resources and education for caregivers and students including:
Families can find printable resource guides and details about the center’s free lending library on FRC’s homepage. They may also sign up to receive the FRC newsletter for updates on webinars, resources, and other information. Community Conversation: School Safety and Security
FCPS will host a community conversation to discuss our approach to safety and security, and the work we do every day to keep our schools safe. Join us Monday, May 8, 6:30-7:30pm, at South Lakes High School. Register for the Community Conversation.
FCPS staff and experts will review our risk assessment processes, the physical measures we already have in place to protect our students and staff, pilot programs to detect vaping, and how we communicate and collaborate with our partners when there is an incident at our schools.
Final Feedback Opportunity on Draft Strategic Plan
If you haven’t already, please participate in the final opportunity to provide feedback on the draft Strategic Plan goals, measures, and pillars. Take the survey today! Feedback will be reviewed by the School Board at their May 9 retreat. It will also be discussed at the May 25 Board meeting. The survey will close Wednesday, May 17. Nebulizer to a Good Home

Student Bus Pass Program
High School and Middle School Students: Get where you need to go – FAST and FREE!
Did you know that you can now sign-up for a Free Student Bus Pass SmarTrip card at all Fairfax County High Schools and Middle Schools and ride the Fairfax Connector and City of Fairfax CUE bus for free? WSHS will have a representative from Fairfax County Department of Transportation here at the school on May 17th to provide more information. Note: students need to have parent’s/guardian’s approval before signing up.
3 Things to Remember - Applying For Your Free Pass
- Your free student bus pass SmarTrip card permits students to ride Fairfax Connector or City of Fairfax CUE buses for free from 5am to 10pm, seven days a week, all year. All other times you will need cash or a standard SmarTrip® card.
- Students can download the application and turn in their completed form to their school's administration office to get the appropriate form to sign up. Home school students: please send completed applications to Michele Philips.
- Parent/guardian consent is required for this program (this is a requirement of FCPS; Fairfax County Government does not distribute consent forms.)
