Message from the Director
Dear Atom Nation,
Each year, we encourage current juniors to apply for the prestigious summer enrichment programs of Virginia Boys State and Virginia Girls State.
Virginia Boys State is a leadership action program, designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon the citizens the fact that our government is just what we make it. Along the way they will have the opportunity to learn the political process.
Similarly, Virginia Girls State is a leadership program to teach rising high school seniors the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society. Through this program, the American Legion Auxiliary hopes to make our young citizens realize that they are an essential part of their government and are responsible for its character and success.
We are proud to announce two of our juniors will be representing Annandale at these long-standing summer enrichment programs. Christina Abouzeki was selected to attend Virginia Girls State at Longwood University. Semir Ali was selected to attend Virginia Boys State at Radford University. These students were selected based on their character, achievements and interest in government, laws and procedures of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Congratulations Semir and Christina!
Erik Healey, Ed.D.
Director of Student Services
Important Dates
- May 1 & 2 - Senior Survey (required for all Seniors)
- May 4, May 18 - NOVA Help Sessions
- May 5 - Senior Decision Day
NOVA Help Sessions: Are you planning to attend Northern Virginia Community College next year or take classes this summer through the Jump Start program? Ms. Acosta, Admissions Counselor from NOVA will be here during lunch on May 4, and May 18 to help students apply to NOVA, register for classes and help get academic holds removed. If you would like to attend please reach out to your counselor or Mr. Yeagley and they can register you for the date and time you would like. All sessions will be held in the College and Career Center (room 103).
Senior Survey on May 1 & 2: Every senior is required to complete the Senior Survey. Student Services uses this information to celebrate the decisions of our graduates, and to send final transcripts to the right colleges. Counselors will visit every senior English class on May 1 & 2 to help students complete the Survey. We understand many students will be taking the IB business exam on those dates, so we will also be coming to IB Business classes on May 3 to catch the students we missed. Please do not complete the Senior Survey before these dates. If you are absent on the day of your English class, you will receive an email notification about make-up days and times for filling out the survey. Note: It is required that all seniors complete the survey by May 20. Seniors who have not completed the survey will be unable to pick up their cap and gown for graduation. If you have questions or concerns, please email Brian Yeagley, College and Career Specialist, at byeagley@fcps.edu
Senior Decision Day: On May 5, AHS will celebrate National Decision Day. At this event, we will recognize our seniors and the different paths they will take after graduation, whether they have decided to attend a four-year college, community college, join the military, workforce, or take a gap year. The celebration will be held during all lunch periods in the Senior Courtyard, where students will enjoy popcorn, music, and take pictures with their peers.
No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for Students Starting April 10: FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to begin offering virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Starting Monday, April 10, parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior will be able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist. Teletherapy services for students are short-term, evidence-based, and culturally-responsive. Teletherapy is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Therapists will be locally-licensed clinicians; 50% of whom identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC); and 40% of whom are bilingual. More than 15 languages are available.Hazel Health’s licensed therapists can help students who are experiencing:Mood/behavior changes, lack of motivation, grief/loss.
Anxiety, worry, fears.
Bullying, sexual identity challenges, challenging peer and family relationships.
Academic stress. The first step for parents is to provide information through an opt-in form. Visit FCPS’ Teletherapy webpage for details.

MONEY FOR COLLEGE : Seniors, have you filled out the FAFSA??? College students may qualify for up to $7,395 in grants, plus student loans to pay for college based on your family’s income. To qualify you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Undocumented students should file the Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application. Contact Kristin Mahieu at kmahieu@fcps.edu for more information or to set up an online appointment for help filling out the FAFSA or VASA.
Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Program: The Fairfax County Department of Family Services staff are recruiting youth, ages 17-24 for the WIOA Youth Program. The WIOA Youth Program assists eligible young adults ages 17-24 to gain the skills needed to succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. Youth can be in current workforce training programs or seeking to get started with a career program. Many current and former ACE students have benefitted from the WIOA program. To learn more about the WIOA Youth Program, please view the following link: https://vcwnorthern.com/youth-programs/
Register to Take the ASVAB: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test measures a young adult’s strengths and weaknesses and provides feedback on potential for future career success. Although the test is developed by the Department of Defense, it is not just for those going into the military. It’s a great start to finding the perfect career for students by highlighting those skills which students naturally have. To sign up for the ASVAB test you may go see your school counselor or contact your local recruiter, Staff Sergeant Meas at 703-424-8923.
Transcript Requests for College Applications & Scholarships: Seniors need to request official high school transcripts ONE MONTH prior to application deadlines. The Student Services staff needs adequate time to process the large number of requests that we receive. For step-by-step instructions and forms for submitting Transcript Requests, go to the AHS College & Career Google site.
