Congratulations to our April Safety Patrols of the Month at McNair Upper! They continue to impress us each day by being on time, being brave and helping other patrols as well as our Mustangs every day on the bus and around the school.

- Kiss and Ride Patrols – Taniya
- Bus 2 – Likitha, Bus 3 – Meera & Nandita, Bus 4 – Atharv
We have been really impressed with all our Mustangs this year! They have been excellent role models and rising up for the challenge this year! If you see one, please thank them for their service this year in helping to keep our kids safe on the bus, kiss and ride, crossing the street and around McNair and McNair Upper. 😊
Students in grades 3-12 took the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in March. The SEL Screener reports will be mailed directly to families in the next week. This website includes both the Parent Report as well as a Family Guide to support you in understanding results and ideas for talking with your student about their results. Both are available in multiple languages. To learn more about SEL and how we support students at school and at home please see the FCPS SEL website. Please reach out to our school counselors, school psychologist or school social worker with any questions.
Come out to celebrate our amazing 5th and 6th grade Mustang Singers on May 18th at 6:00 PM for their Spring Chorus Concert! If your child is in Chorus, they will need to arrive at 5:30 PM to the cafeteria in their blue Mustang music t-shirts and jeans. We hope you can join us for our concert!
Each year our McNair 6th graders create promotion hats for the 6th grade promotion ceremony. The art department is looking for donations of craft supplies students can use to decorate their hats: stickers, fake flowers, rhinestones, etc. No glitter please.
If you are cleaning out your craft supplies and find any items you no longer need, your donations will be much appreciated! You are welcome to send in donations with your student to give to Ms. Coe, art teacher, or drop them off at the main office between the hours of 8:00 AM-4:00 PM.
Students in all FCPS schools can enroll in the Elementary Institute for the Arts (EIFTA). EIFTA is a weekly arts enrichment program for students in rising 3rd through 6th grades and will be held during the month of July. Students take classes in art, music, theatre, and dance every day. Transportation is provided from around the county. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. Check out the website for more information or email eifta@fcps.edu.
Do you have a rising 5th or 6th grader interested in helping keep our Mustangs safe around our school and on our busses? Do they have what it takes to be a leader, be responsible, brave, kind, respectful and maintain 3’s & 4’s on their progress reports? If so, have your Mustang consider joining our awesome safety patrol team at McNair Upper! We would love to have them on our team!
Please have your Mustang complete the application by May 31st to be considered for next year. Please note: Not everyone who applies will be selected. Students are selected by area of need, teacher recommendation, and their application.
If you have any questions please email Ms. Luck at kjluck@fcps.edu.
We are lucky to have BIKES coming back to MUES PE for the weeks of May 8th-26th. This unit will be part of our Outdoor Recreation Unit.
With parent permission, students are encouraged to bring their own helmets and bikes to school, but they need to lock it up on one of our bike racks located around our school. We are not responsible for personal bikes, if they are not locked up properly.
We will be providing bikes and helmets for those that do not have their own to use in PE class. All students will be required to wear a helmet in PE class. Students will be given a hairnet to protect their heads while sharing the helmets.
Students will be learning how to check the ABCs, how to wear a helmet properly, how to ride a bike, understand the importance of using hand signals, riding road signs, bike safety stations, learning rules of the road, doing trail runs, and other fun things.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Luck (kjluck@fcps.edu) or Ms. Smith (dasmith2@fcps.edu).
SOL testing begins at McNair Upper ES next week and will run through the month of May. Students in grades 3-6 will take both the reading and math SOL. Our 5th grade students will also take the science SOL. Below are a few friendly reminders to help your Mustang do their best on their upcoming SOL tests:
- Make sure that your Mustang is well-rested and gets a good night's sleep.
- Prepare your Mustang a healthy breakfast the morning of each SOL test.
- If your Mustang is not feeling well, please have them stay home and rest. Makeup testing sessions are available to students who miss school on the day of their SOL test(s).
- Make sure that your Mustang arrives to school on time. All testing begins at 9:00 AM. If they are tardy to school and testing has begun, they will be unable to test that day and be placed in a makeup testing group.
- Encourage your Mustang to not stress over the test. If your Mustang would like to practice for their upcoming SOL tests, they can complete SOL Pass activities that their classroom teacher has assigned to them.
- Be proud of your Mustang and let them know this- they have worked hard all year!

As administration begins collaborating with classroom teachers to form grade level classes for the 23-24 school year, I understand that parent/guardian input is valuable to consider too.
Interested parents/guardians that would like the opportunity to share their input with me should do so no later than Friday, May 5th. The type of information you are welcome to share with me can include the learning environment your child does their best work, a description of your child's learning style, and specific areas of strength or opportunities for growth that you feel best describes your child. You may also include the names of peers your child works well with. We will do our best to partner them with at least one. Providing input is optional.
I kindly ask that you do not request specific teachers; rather keep the focus of your email to the type of learning environment and learning style that will support your child's academic and social wellness success.
Thank you for your continued partnership in making your child’s experience at McNair Upper ES a positive one!
