Congratulations to our Hayfield Winterguard and Indoor Percussion teams for their performances April 1 & 2 at the Atlantic Indoor Association Championships in Hampton Roads. The Winterguard took first place in their division and Indoor Percussion placed third in their division. Both ensembles earned the highest scores and rankings in school history! Congratulations to all!
 Hayfield’s Red Cross Club made get well cards for the INOVA Lorton Hospital.

They also spent time making blankets and donated them to the Eleanor U. Kennedy Shelter and made homeless first aid care packages and donated them to New Hope Housing. |
The Edison Academy Crime Scene Investigation Team earned a silver medal at the SkillsUSA Virginia State Leadership and Skills Conference this past weekend in Virginia Beach. Ava Weschler (West Springfield High School), Nicolas Torres (West Springfield High School), Brooke Staab (Hayfield Secondary School) and Casey Laycock (Lake Braddock Secondary School) represented Edison Academy in the Crime Scene Investigation competition. They were led by John Kayajanian, one of the Criminal Justice instructors at the Edison Academy. Please congratulate them on this outstanding accomplishment!
Organized by teacher Theresa Downs and joined by teacher Heather Sieber, ESOL Dept. Chair Roseann Contreras, and counselor Molly Redican, ESOL students from Hayfield Secondary enjoyed a tour of the George Mason University campus on April 20. The tour, which was led by GMU students, highlighted points of interest such as the library, classrooms, dining halls, and recreation centers -- all of which gave students positive impressions of college life and academic opportunities after high school.

Congratulations to Ben Craven (Trumpet), Emma Ishii (Violin) and Erik Figueroa (Tenor) for representing Hayfield at the All-VA Band, Orchestra and Choir event this weekend! This is the highest honor for a musician in the state of VA. |

Shout out to the Hayfield Latin Certamen teams for an awesome Spring Season!
Certamen is a quiz bowl type game focus on the Latin Language, Roman history, Greco-Roman Myth, and Latin literature. Students compete in teams of up to 4 at a time, tournament style against other schools on a buzzer system, making speed as crucial as knowledge. There are three levels: Novice (level 1), Intermediate (level 2), and Advanced (level 3+)
- On April 1st Hayfield sent one advanced team to Harvard University to compete against some of the top schools in the country! We made it to the semi-final round and came in 5th place! Team of: Jackie Berrigan, Jordan Kirkpatrick, Annabelle Huang, Bailey O’Connell, and Sam Rutledge.
- On April 29th, Hayfield sent 6 teams to Stafford HS to compete at the Virginia State finals tournament. In Virginia, we have two divisions (open – regular), and competitive (for students with National experience or similar).
We took home the following awards:
- Novice Open – 2nd place! Team of: Scarlett Forster, Jay Osler, and Claire Schouten
- Novice Open – 5th place! Team of: Cole Charboneau, Jay Larson, and Katherine Tumbarello,
- Intermediate Open – 1st place! Team of: Iris Nijbroek and Simona Seiter
- Advanced Open – 2nd place! Team of: Max Hayden, Balin Hunt, and Sydney Wong
- Advanced Competitive – 1st place! Team of: Anne Huang, Jordan Kirkpatrick, Bailey O’Connell, and Sam Rutledge.
- Our Advanced Competitive team will also be bringing home the “Howard W. Chang Virginia State Perpetual Trophy” to the Hawks Nest!! Woo!!

The brand new Hawkstar program aims to celebrate both high school and middle school students who have demonstrated growth this year in any (or all!) of the following categories:
- demonstrated outstanding leadership or service
- improved in homework/organization
- are hitting their stride in a subject
- who have had an upward trend in grades
Our Hawkstars were celebrated in a ceremony that included recognition, certificates of success and donuts! Congratulations & keep up the excellent work!
What is Portrait of a Graduate (POG)?
From the FCPS Website: "...POG acknowledges that in our rapidly changing world, education needs to evolve to fulfill our mission of supporting student success in school and in life. POG prioritizes the development of skills that will empower students to be productive citizens of a global community and successful in the workforce of the future."
