👋🏼 A Fond Farewell...and a Warm Welcome! ❤️

You Can Count On Us

Carol Larsen

Dear Poplar Tree families,

We wanted to let you all know that after 31 years in FCPS, our wonderful Assistant Principal Carol Larsen will be retiring at the end of June this year. We are so grateful that she had the opportunity to return “home” to the place where she started. We will miss her immensely and are so appreciative of all she has done for our school. We are excited for this next chapter in her life!

When Mrs. Larsen announced her retirement, I began working with the Region 5 leadership team to determine the next steps in filling our Assistant Principal position. I am excited to announce that our new Assistant Principal will be Amy Alley, currently an assistant principal at Mantua Elementary in Fairfax. Please see additional information below about Ms. Alley.

Please join me in wishing a fond farewell to Ms. Larsen and a warm welcome to Ms. Alley! We look forward to all Ms. Alley will contribute to our community in the future!

Have a wonderful week!

Amy Alley

Welcome Amy Alley

Amy Alley has 25 years in Fairfax County and 11 years as an Assistant Principal. She began her career at Hollin Meadows Science and Math Focus School in Alexandria, VA as a 5th Grade and then Science Resource Teacher. She then moved into the School-Based Technology Specialist role at Belvedere ES in Falls Church, VA before becoming an Assistant Principal at Mantua ES in Fairfax, VA.

Ms. Alley is originally from Chicago and received her undergraduate degree from Hanover College, a Master’s degree in Educational Technology from George Washington University, and an Education Specialist degree in School Administration from George Washing University.

During her time with the county, Ms. Alley has been a member of the Region 5 Assistant Principal Planning Committee which developed and delivered professional development. She has collaborated with the school-based Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Team to support student achievement through a Response To Intervention process that provided students with the needed academic, emotional and/or behavioral interventions. Relationships are at the core of Ms. Alley’s work. It is through these relationships that she has supported teachers and students, partnered with parents, built moral, fostered creativity and growth, and created an environment of trust and reliability. Ms. Alley has also built strong community relationships with the PTA, through collaboration on school-wide events, enrichment opportunities, and fundraising activities.

When she’s not at school, Ms. Alley enjoys spending time with her teenage son and watching him play sports at Madison HS. They love going to baseball games and cheering on the Nats and Cubs and are working their way through visits to all the major league stadiums. Ms. Alley also enjoys yoga, traveling, live music, and spending time with family and friends.
