Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Happy May, Stallion Family!

Now that April showers have subsided, I’m looking forward to the May flowers that are sure to bloom in the coming weeks! For all of my fellow gardening friends, this is the season that we love, right?

Here in SoCo Country, we have lots to celebrate, and a few items to share that are upcoming.

Here are the items we celebrate:

Celebrations

  1. This past Wednesday, we hosted our Honor Roll celebrations during Advisory classes. Sponsored by our PTSO, we were able to give gift card/treat bags to 100 randomly drawn names of students who made Honor Roll status for the third nine-week period. The best part of doing these presentations in class is when the rest of the students start applauding for the winners of the gift bags! This spontaneous celebration of fellow Stallion students is heart-warming.
  2. On Thursday, I tried a new “Office on Wheels” activity. I took my laptop out into the hallways during the second class of the day so that I could be more accessible to students and staff. That class period I spoke with three staff members and a dozen students. That level of access to each other is so important in building trust and relationships.
  3. This week was our Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. So many people contributed to this week’s activities, including the SGA, PTSO, and others.

Lots to appreciate, from our hallway celebrations of staff …

…to our delicious luncheon on Friday!

And so much more! Thank you to Ms. Kelley Peck, our Leadership teacher, for our Guess Who Trivia Contest, and EVERYTHING else she pulled together for us! I know every school wishes they had a Ms. Peck, but there’s only one, and she is SoCo for life!

  1. Our students continue to amaze our school community with their artistic skills. We’re inserting a TON of culture and student talent into our hallways. Check out this latest mural of wings that students can take selfie’s in front of!

This past week we had several Senior Night events for our sports teams.

Tuesday - Girls Lacrosse

Wednesday – Track

Friday – Baseball, Softball, and Boys Soccer

These events have been some of the most special of the season. I especially enjoy hearing what the seniors’ favorite memories are. Two particular memories stood out to me this night. First, watching #9 on the softball team, Ava, grab a pop fly seemingly from out of nowhere left me literally jumping out of my seat. Check out my Twitter account (@KambarKhoshaba) to see me and the team celebrating the end of that inning! Second, I truly enjoyed meeting so many engaging parents. We had great conversations all night, and I especially enjoyed getting to talk with Dan Goslee, who helped to educate more about baseball.

Trust me when I say that all schools don’t celebrate seniors the way we do. It makes me so proud to be a Stallion when I experience these events!

  1. This was opening weekend for our latest theater production, The Lightning Thief, the Percy Jackson Musical. I had the pleasure of attending Saturday evening, and I totally enthralled with this event. Ms. Rumberger did another OUTSTANDING job with preparing students with this latest production! If you weren’t able to make it to this weekend’s events, don’t worry. Next weekend we have another set of events.

The show runs on May 12 and 13 at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased at [schstheatre.com]schstheatre.com or directly at this link. The musical is based on the 2005 novel by Rick Riordan. Follow Percy Jackson who newly discovers that he is a demigod and goes on a quest to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt and prevent a war between the Greek gods. Please note this show is rated PG for mild language and choreographed violence. You can reach out to Molly Rumberger at mdrumberger@fcps.edu should you have any questions.

Looking Ahead:

  1. To South County seniors/juniors who are planning on attending prom: If you don't have a dress yet, SoCo Leadership is having May 9th, 12th, and 17th as try-on dates for the dresses collected during the Prom Dress Drive. Be at school between 3:15 and 4:15 in the girls locker room. These dresses are completely free! If you love it, take it home! If not, try on more. Please remember that these dresses are donated and may be secondhand/worn.
  2. School Nurse’s Day is this Wednesday, May 10. This is a great day to let our School Nurse know how much you appreciate her. A friendly smile, a wave “hello,” or sentiment of appreciation goes a long way with encouragement.
  3. This past week you should have received information about the Silent No More presentation that will be coming to SoCo on Friday, May 26 from 8:15-9:40. This assembly will be for freshmen only due to space limitations. Please check this past week’s email from eNotify for more details.
  4. Lastly, believe it or not, we're already planning events for next year. One of the first events we have is back-to-school night. In planning this event, we want to know what your preference is for the format of that event. Please complete this survey

Thank you for your feedback, and have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

nurse day

National School Nurse Day is Wednesday, May 10. It is a day to recognize the many contributions that school nurses make to student health and learning.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. They are advocates who bridge healthcare and education by supporting student health and readiness to learn. School nurses are essential to our community and work tirelessly to make a positive impact in the lives of their students.

Please join us in thanking the PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.
