April Newsletter from Principal Tam

Good evening Westbriar Families,

Pictured above is Westbriar's Odyssey of the Mind Division 2 team who came in third place in the state tournament held on Saturday, April 15th.  They were the only elementary school team competing against middle school teams.  We are so proud of Ryder Gee, Minh Phan, Ethan Aquilino, Arjun Arunkumar, Shlok Mehta, Dexter Delaney, and Aarav Dadbhawala for this achievement.

While Westbriar's Division 1 team did not place, we recognize their hard work and efforts and continue to be proud that they competed in their division at the state tournament.  Congratulations again to Sonia Radheshwar, Madhavi Duruvu, Ramana Duruvu, Ridhi Gudla, Riya Gudla  and Ishti Jain.  Thank you to all parents and coaches who supported them this year!

Spring Pictures

Strawbridge, the photography company we are using this school year has provided an update on Spring Pictures.  In the next few weeks, they will deliver to our school, proofs of your child's spring picture.  We will send home that packet, it will have ordering information.  You do not need to return the proof to our school or to Strawbridge.

This is different from ordering class pictures.  In our March Wednesday folders, we provided ordering information for class pictures.

Science Fair

Thank you to our PTA and the many volunteers who worked hard to ensure our in person Science Fair held this past Thursday evening was a huge success!  During COVID, we held virtual Science Fairs.  While those were well done, nothing beats coming back in person and seeing all the amazing science experiments from over 80 of our students in Kindergarten thru 6th grade.

Safety Reminder - Check in with main office when at school

If you have been to our school this week, you would have noticed our front lobby looking a bit different.  We updated our seating to allow for more people to be seated as they wait on their child.  In addition to updated seating, we placed stanchions with retractable belts with welcome signs alerting visitors to check in with the main office.  We want to ensure everyone coming into our building checks in with the main office so we know who is in the building during school hours.  Stanchions are removed during arrival and dismissal so students and staff can navigate those busy times.

Friendly reminder that anyone on school grounds need to report to the main office.  This includes outdoor areas such as when students are out at recess.  Our staff is trained to ensure only students and staff are out at recess and in the playground, upper field, and blacktop areas.  We know you may want to drop by and say hello to your child when they are outside or at recess.  We  ask that you first check in with the main office, thank you for your support on this matter.

Brad Mitchell Memorial

As some of you may know, Brad Mitchell, a beloved SACC teacher passed away during the first year of COVID.  During that time, our PTA worked to purchase a bronze plaque to honor Mr. Mitchell's contributions to our school and to many Westbriar students and their families.  I am pleased to share that on Saturday, May 20th, we will be holding a dedication ceremony to honor Mr. Mitchell.  Details are still being worked out, please keep an eye out for communication from our PTA after they have finalized the time and location.

We hope to see many of you at our next PTA function -  International Night.  International Night will be held on Friday, May 12th starting at 6:30pm-8:30pm.  Information on signing up to bring a yummy dish to share and to participate in the parade of nations will be communicated by our PTA, please keep a look out for it.  Have a nice and restful weekend!

Sincerely,

Ms. Mary Tam, Principal - mhtam@fcps.edu
