Greetings, Irving Families!

We had such an excellent turn out for our first International Night since the pandemic. I am thankful for all of the efforts of Ms. Baez, Ms. McNeely, and Ms. Abdifatah who organized the evening and for all of the staff, students, and families who volunteered to support the evening and share their cultures as well. There were so many highlights from the clothing, detailed and personal displays to the food and spectacular performances - it is definitely a highlight of the year!

As we head into next week, we begin SOL testing - the first test is on Tuesday, May 2, for 8th graders. Prior to testing, we will be reminding students of a few things listed below - please be sure to review the list with your child as all students will take SOLs in the next two weeks.

We have several exciting events coming up that we look forward to sharing more about in the coming days. Up first is Teacher Appreciation Week, May 8-12. We hope you will celebrate our teachers by sharing notes of thanks with them!

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

Principal

Library News

Wisconsin-based author Stephanie Bodeen traveled to spend the day at Irving Middle School on Wednesday, April 26th.  She presented a morning talk about her book The Compound, an afternoon discussion about her novel The Raft, and conducted a writing workshop with students in between!   Students were able to ask the author specific questions about her novels, as well as questions about the writing process.  If you suddenly find your child spending all of their time jotting down notes in a journal, or frantically typing long narratives, you can blame it on the inspiring visit from Bodeen!

In addition to receiving inspiration and feedback on writing, many students went home with new, signed copies of Ms. Bodeen’s novels.  One hundred copies of The Fallout, The Compound’s sequel, were given as door prizes to random, lucky attendees.  Writing workshop participants and many of those attending the afternoon book talk received signed copies of her first novel.

A student who participated in both a discussion and the writing workshop shared, "We had a great time listening to her experiences and it was really great learning how an author made a book and how she persevered when she had setbacks.”

A special thanks to all of those who helped to make possible this special day for our students at Irving.

News from the PTA

PTA Board Elections -THANK YOU to the awesome parents who stepped up to be the PTA Exec Team nominating committee. We have a nominal slate, as the President, Treasurer and Vice President are happy to return, but we can’t have a PTA without a Secretary. (PS – the secretary does not write this every week; you can blame the VP for that). Let’s make this a competitive nail-biter of an election! If interested, please send an email to IrvingPTANomCommittee@gmail.com or just complete this form (copy and paste the link) - www.tinyurl.com/WIMSPTANom.

WE NEED TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY VOLUNTEERS!! Want to volunteer but not get into a long-term commitment? Help us appreciate our awesome teachers May 8 – 12. Quick, easy, high-impact help…..and fun! We would love a leader for each day and you’re not alone – we will brainstorm and plan together. Email us at IrvingMSPTA@gmail.com (or just sign up on the Sign Up Genius here (copy & paste, links don't work) - www.tinyurl.com/WIMSTeacherAppreciation2023)

Spirit wear should be delivered to your student within the next 2 weeks (thank you Principal Conley for doing this!) Next Restaurant Night is May 11th - @ Mezeh - LET’S EAT and SUPPORT OLD KEENE MILL PLAZA! The next RESTAURANT NIGHT is Mezeh. Stay tuned for details. PTA Car Wash is June 7th! - PTA & volunteers (& maybe the Principal!) show teacher & staff appreciation by washing their cars during the school day! We can only do this with volunteers. Please sign up on the Sign Up Genius here (copy & paste, links don't work) -  www. tinyurl.com/PTACarWash2023 OUR LAST MEETING IS MAY 9TH – join us! That is where (we hope) there will be a NAIL BITER of an election and we will elect the next PTA exec committee!
