Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

We had many exciting events at CWES this week, and enjoyed seeing many of our families at our Military Breakfast as well as the band and strings concert. We have so many talented musicians, thank you to everyone who helped make these events so successful!

This morning our students got to attend an amazing and interactive assembly with author Ada Ari. Ms. Ari shared exciting details about the geography of West Africa and invited students to learn traditional dances before reading one of her books, The Spider’s Thin Legs. If you would like to order autographed copies of Ms. Ari’s books, please fill out the attached order form or the paper copy in next week’s Tuesday Folders by Friday, May 5.

Field Day is Back!! Please see below for a message from our PE teachers:

Parents/Guardians,

Say “Thank You!” to Your Favorite Teacher

The first full week of May (May 8 to 12) is Teacher Appreciation Week. You can submit a recorded message thanking and celebrating our school’s amazing teachers and staff.

Your video message may be selected to share with our teachers and community on FCPS’ website and social media channels throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. Surprising our teachers and staff with these messages of gratitude and support is part of the fun, so keep your contribution under wraps until May.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Spring SOL Schedule

This Spring our 3rd through 6th graders will be participating in the Virginia Standards of Learning Assessments, also referred to as the SOL Tests.  Below you will find a schedule for each grade level’s tests.  We want our students to be rested and ready each day, so be sure that they continue to get lots of rest the night before their tests and eat a hearty breakfast in the morning.  If possible, avoid scheduling appointments that conflict with your child’s test so that they may test with their classmates as they are accustomed to doing.  If you have any questions, please contact our School Testing Coordinator, Mindy Milliron at mamilliron@fcps.edu.

Spotlight on CWES Alumni!

down

The Woodson Deaf Academic Bowl Team, comprised of former CWES and DHOH Program Alumni: Sonan Sahgal, Maggie Smallwood and Karine Jelalian (All 10th graders at Woodson High School) competed in the National Deaf Academic Bowl at Galludet University, the nation’s premier research university dedicated to serving students who are deaf and hard of hearing, in Washington DC this past weekend.

The National Deaf Academic Bowl competition requires teams of 3-4 DHOH students, to answer academic questions in the areas of Arts and Entertainment, Literature, Math, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Current Events, Pop Culture, Sports and Leisure. The top 16 Deaf Academic Bowl teams competed at Galludet over the course of 4 days, from April 20-23, 2023.

Out of 16 teams, the Woodson Cavaliers took 4th place -earning the team medals and tying the record previously held at Woodson for this competition.

Additionally CWES Alumni, Sonan Sahgal, was selected as one of the top 8 All-Star students of the competition, earning a separate individual medal for this honor. Congratulations, we are so proud of our CWES Alumni!

Safety and Security Town Hall

Community Conversation: School Safety and Security

FCPS will host a community conversation to discuss our approach to safety and security, and the work we do every day to keep our schools safe. Join us Monday, May 8, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at South Lakes High School. Registration information will be available soon..

FCPS staff and experts will review our risk assessment processes, the physical measures we already have in place to protect our students and staff, pilot programs to detect vaping, and how we communicate and collaborate with our partners when there is an incident at our schools.

Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

There’s an easy five-step process outlined for parents looking to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.
  2. Identify your local school.
  3. Gather documents.
  4. Fill out forms.
  5. Schedule an appointment.  Please contact Amy Decatur, our Student Information Assistant, by email at aldecatur@fcps.edu or by phone at 703-764-5600 to set up an appointment

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

Autism Acceptance Month graphic

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

ParentVue Sign up for Parents

What is ParentVue and How You Can Sign Up

If you do not already have a ParentVUE SIS account, sign up now to monitor and support your child’s academic success! Through ParentVUE, you are able to monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. You can also access special reports for your student like progress reports and assessments score reports.

Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks you through the steps on how to do so. You can also find out more about SIS ParentVUE on our website.

Update Contact Information in WeCare@School

Within SIS ParentVUE, Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system. weCare helps manage contact and emergency medical information by allowing parents/caregivers to enter and update their children’s data online.

That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive critical updates from the district and their child’s school through the eNotify system. FCPS uses eNotify to communicate emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closing and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent by email, text, and occasionally by phone. Learn more about updating your emergency care information.
