There are two sessions:  8am – approximately 11:00am and 12pm – approximately 3pm. Responsibilities include checking ID’s, handing out and collecting tests, monitoring the test takers and counting tests when finished. Volunteers do not have to sign up for both sessions in the same day unless he/she would like to do so.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you are available or know of anyone, a college student perhaps who may be interested in helping, please contact Kie Anderson at keanderson1@fcps.edu.

From the Library

The library is pleased to offer a diverse collection of resources that allows all of our students to see themselves. Students can find a wide array of fiction and nonfiction that expands their world view.  In May, we are highlighting Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Jewish-American Heritage Month.

SYNC Audiobooks for Teens is back with their free audiobook program! Their free season runs through early August. Two titles are available each a week, and change over to two new ones each Thursday. Once you’ve downloaded a title, it’s yours to keep forever. You can get the complete list of titles, and the week that they are available, here.

As the end of the school year approaches, please keep the following dates in mind. Seniors should have all library materials returned no later than Tuesday, May 23. All other students’ library materials are due by Friday, June 2.

We love to work with classes to develop research skills, and to help students create products that show their learning. Are your students conducting research in their classes? Please remind your students that there are fantastic research supports available through their HHS Library course on Schoology and that they can always reach us at hhs_library@fcps.edu to schedule one-on-one support.

SOL Testing

Herndon High School students will be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments between May 11, 2023, and June 1, 2023, at Herndon High School. Students will receive their testing schedule and other important information via school E-Mail during the week of May 1, 2023. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Some SOL assessments are required under federal law, and some may be needed to verify credit for high school graduation. The table below shows the SOL EOC non-writing tests available to fulfill federal participation and/or verified credit requirements.

Federal law requires schools to provide students one SOL test in reading, in mathematics, and in science during grades 9-12. These assessments provide information about student achievement to the parent/guardian, school, division, and state.

State law requires students to verify credits to fulfill Standard and Advanced Studies diploma graduation requirements, as outlined on the Graduation Requirements and Course Planning webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academics/graduation-requirements-and-course-planning). SOL tests are the most common way students earn the verified credits they need. However, performance assessments (social studies only) or substitute assessments approved by the Virginia Board of Education may be another option available for your student to verify certain credits.

Content Area: Mathematics

  • Tests: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry

Content Area: Science

  • Tests: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science

Content Area: English

  • Test: Reading

Content Area: Social Studies

  • Tests: World History 1, World History 2, Virginia and U.S. History

A SOL High School Assessment Frequently Asked Questions webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43148) provides more information about SOL EOC tests in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). If you do not want your student to participate in SOL assessments, you have the right to refuse testing. However, any decision to refuse SOL tests should be made in consultation with school staff to allow full consideration of any potential implications for on-time graduation. The Right to Refuse Assessments webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/34277) offers important information as you consider this decision.

If you would like to read this message in a preferred language, please view this website (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43069).

In most cases, SOL assessment results are available in the Student Information System (SIS) ParentVUE within about three months. If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact your student’s school counselor or our Assessment Coach, Dr. Karl Gussow at ksgussow@fcps.edu.

Sports Physicals

Herndon High School will be hosting their Sports Physicals on Monday, May 15th. Take advantage and cross this off your to do list for next year now while supporting the Athletic Training program! The physicals currently on file expire on June 30th, a new physical is needed for next year. After June 30th, students will not be permitted to participate in any team related activities (other than interest meetings) until a new VHSL physical form has been submitted. You are always welcome to get a sports physical through your family physician or an urgent care center, but this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser.

Did you know? This is an incredibly important night for us because FCPS only provides the athletic training personnel, not the supplies we need to help your kids. The money earned is used to purchase the supplies that allow us to help our student-athletes stay healthy and play to their highest potential. Every piece of gauze, glove, roll of tape, ice bag, bandage, nose plug, brace, crutch…everything you see us use is purchased through the funds earned at this annual event. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Just for reference- 1 physical does not even cover the cost of 1 case of tape (we go through 80-100 cases per year).

Physicals are $50- payable by cash or check on site or pre-paid through MySchoolBucks prior to the event. All details will be provided in a confirmation email when appointments are made. Additional donations or ‘sponsorships’ for student-athletes who may not be able to afford this opportunity are always welcome. We ensure forms are complete and there are no issues (unless a doctor notices something that warrants further medical attention). All forms will be put on file so kids are ready to go- you’ll just need to complete online registration for whatever activity they choose.

Click here to make an appointment-: 2023 Athletic Physical RegistrationYou will receive a confirmation email within 48 business hours of scheduling.

Any questions, comments, or concerns? Please contact Lisa Petruzzi (LTPetruzzi@fcps.edu) or Marleigh Hall (MHall2@fcps.edu)
