Parent Input for 2023-2024
It's hard to believe it is time to start thinking about next school year. In order to make the best class placement for your child, we ask for your input on how your child best learns and any considerations when placing students in classrooms. We cannot honor requests for specific teachers.

Please let the office know if your child will not be returning to Deer Park for the next school year.

SEL Conflict Resolution
In school and in life, conflicts are a common occurrence since we all have different interests, strengths and personalities. Fortunately most conflicts in school are what we refer to as “small” problems, even though they may cause big feelings. When helping students learn how to solve conflicts, it helps to know the difference between “small” problems and “big” problems. “Small” problems are when students may feel frustrated or annoyed but are safe and able to solve it on their own. “Big” problems are when students feel scared or someone may be in danger and they should tell an adult.
There are many strategies that students can use to solve conflicts. Students are encouraged to try at least two strategies and if the problem is still happening then get help from a trusted adult. It's important to be calm in order to solve a problem respectfully. If a student is in the red zone and has really big feelings, that’s okay. The student should take a break and/or use their breathing and calming strategies. Once students are calm they can handle the situation respectfully in a way to make it better. Students may benefit from coaching from an adult to help them learn and practice how to solve problems peacefully.
Conflict resolution strategies:
- Take a break and get calm
- Talk it out (use a respectful voice to say how you feel)
- Walk Away
- Do something else (like play another game)
- Share and Take Turns
- Say “stop”
- Apologize
- Ignore
- Find a win-win solution (compromise)
- Play a game of chance (like rock-paper-scissors)
- Listen to the other person
Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Students in grades 3-12 took the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in March. The SEL Screener reports will be mailed directly to families in the next week. This website includes both the Parent Report as well as a Family Guide to support you in understanding results and ideas for talking with your student about their results. Both are available in multiple languages. To learn more about SEL and how we support students at school and at home please see the FCPS SEL website. Please reach out to our school counselors, school psychologist or school social worker with any questions.
