Five Pillars of Early Literacy

Fluency

Fluency is the ability to read accurately and quickly.

The number of words read correctly per minute can indicate a students fluency with reading which impacts their success with concentrating on the meaning of the text, not decoding the individual words.

Ways you can support this at home:

  • Model fluent reading at home and read books aloud with your child
  • Choral reading aloud - time when you read along side of your child while they are reading a book on their reading level
  • Re-read favorite books and turn them into readers theater (acting them out and giving characters more emotion when reading)
  • Echo reading: read a sentence or paragraph from your child's favorite book with expression and have them mimic you.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the key to knowing more about everything.

One universal teaching strategy to support students is pre-teaching vocabulary in the classroom prior to content lessons. This occurs often in science and social studies but can also occur for reading and math!

Ways you can support this at home:

  • Exposure to new words and relating them to ones we already know can greatly support growth of vocabulary. Choosing new words of the day to learn as a family and intentionally use can help.
  • Playing word games that involve identifying synonyms and antonyms
  • Reading aloud
  • Even singing songs and identifying unknown words can support growth of vocabulary!
