Annandale Community Insider - April 30

a

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

This weekend, I had the opportunity to experience my first Taste of Annandale as principal of Annandale High School. At the event, I ran into many former students and parents from the past 20+ years that I have gotten to know working in this community. The highlight was running into Alfredo and Arturo Ramirez, who both graduated from J.E.B. Stuart (now Justice High School) in the early 2000’s. Alfredo started Big Things Boxing Academy in Seven Corners, a non-profit that provides kids a safe, after-school space where they can learn a new sport, stay active, and feel empowered. It is so rewarding to hear stories of how my former students are involved and giving back to the community.

This past week, we kicked off testing season with a successful start to SOL and IB testing. At Annandale, we are proud that we have many systems in place to support our students. Our approach to high-quality instruction, along with providing targeted intervention through PRIDE Time ASAP, and Super Saturdays, go a long way to meeting students’ needs. In addition, when students are not successful on their first attempt, we provide even more targeted intervention during the school day. Please see below for more information on how we support students’ SOL retakes.

There is more excitement to come this week. I encourage you to attend the Annandale Theatre production of “The Lightning Thief,” which runs May 4-7. “The Lightning Thief” is a musical adaptation of the first book in the popular Percy Jackson series. Get your tickets now via ETIX! The Senior Art Show will be on display Thursday, May 4 from 5:00-7:00pm, seniors will be celebrating Senior Decision Day on Friday, May 5, and our Inclusion Track Meet will be held on Saturday, May 6.

Finally, May 8-12 is Teacher Appreciation Week! We will be celebrating the hard work and dedication of our teachers throughout the week. To support these efforts, we are seeking $5-$10 gift cards, to any establishment of your choice. If you are able to donate, please drop off gift cards to the Main Office or purchase gift cards via Amazon and have them shipped to Annandale High School. We also encourage you or your student to reach out directly to your student’s teachers with a note of appreciation. Knowing they are making a difference is a priceless gift.

Have a great week, Atom Nation. As always, reach out with questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Lightning Thief

May 4-7 - Spring Musical - The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical: As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly-discovered powers he can't control, a destiny he doesn't want, and a mythology textbook's worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus's master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the thief. He must travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and come to terms with the father who abandoned him. Adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an action-packed mythical adventure "worthy of the gods" (Time Out New York). Tickets now available on ETIX!

They are asking students and families to submit a recorded message thanking and celebrating our school’s amazing teachers and staff. Your video message may be selected to share with our teachers and community on FCPS’ website and social media channels throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. Surprising our teachers and staff with these messages of gratitude and support is part of the fun, so keep your contribution under wraps until May. More information and a submission form are available online.
