The Lion’s Roar

April 21, 2023

Military families at breakfast reception

April is the Month of the Military Child, and this week the whole school celebrated those students with several spirit days – Monday was Yellow Day to show support for our troops, Tuesday was Camo Day, Wednesday was Purple Up! Day, and Thursday was RED Day (Red for Everyone Deployed). On Monday we also hosted a breakfast reception for our military students and their families that was a great success!

Nearly a quarter of our families at Lane are military-connected, and we are proud and honored to have them in our school community. To all of our military lions, thank you all for your service to our country!

Literacy News from Our Reading Specialist: Resources and Literacy Night on May 4th!

Hi Lane families!

I have created some narrated literacy slides to talk about the updates to literacy instruction at the county level and what that looks like here at Lane. The narrated slides are a YouTube video of me discussing the slides in greater detail. A copy of the actual slides is also available below, should you also want to read through them.

Additionally, I have created a feedback form to get more information from you! You can access it at the link below. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at Literacy Night on May 4th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. More information on that event is forthcoming!

Volunteers Needed for Math Materials

We are looking for volunteers to help teachers make math games. This work would include making copies, laminating game pieces, cutting lamination, and assembling the games.

If you are interested and available to help, please reach out to Lane’s Math Resource Teacher, Kristie Cohen, at kmcohen@fpcs.edu. If you do not have availability during the school day but would like to help out at home by cutting lamination, please reach out as well.

Thank you!

School Library Month art

April is School Library Month

In FCPS libraries, students develop knowledge and skills, experience a sense of belonging, find inspiration and support, and have the ability to freely pursue their personal interests and academic growth. Our librarian, Mrs. Chozick, helps all of our Lane Lions discover new worlds – real and imaginary – through books during library time each week. She creates lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

Next week, April 23rd through 29th is National Library Week. Please join us in celebrating our library and Mrs. Chozick throughout the week!

Watch this video to learn how FCPS librarians make a difference.

New Event: Fentanyl and Other Drugs in FCPS  A Community Conversation with Free REVIVE! Narcan Training

Last month, FCPS hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. Most fatal overdoses in Fairfax County in recent years involved fentanyl.

FCPS will hold a second event with new information focused on the opioid crisis in Fairfax County Public Schools. The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24th, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Woodson High School. Families and students will learn how, as a community, we can partner to reduce the impact of these harmful—and often deadly—drugs. All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

Childcare will be available. Transportation will also be available from select schools throughout the county. View the registration page for details.
