Greetings, Irving Families!

The first week of the 4th quarter was quick! We enjoyed learning about our students during the Portrait of a Graduate Presentations (POG) of Learning on Monday and Wednesday. Our students are growing in POG skills and using them in many ways outside of school - our students are involved in so many activities. Thank you for all you do to support, promote, and get students to and from so many activities!

Next week is the week before SOLs, also known as, Stress Less Week, our counselors have planned a number of fun activities during break to include line dancing, a mini-yoga session, enjoying bubbles, sidewalk chalk, games, and just relaxing. Be sure to see below for what students should wear each day next week!

Thursday, April 27 from 5:30-7:30 pm, is our long awaited International Night. We are very excited to bring this fun and informative night back to Irving. ALL families are encouraged and welcome to attend. Please join us to learn about cultures from around the world presented by staff and students. We have performances, displays, demonstrations, and an opportunity for families to try food samples from local restaurants!

Lastly, our Lost and Found is overflowing again - clothing, shoes, bottles, lunch bags, and a variety of other items. In order to make things more visible, we are seeking a clothing rack and hangers. If you have a clothing rack and/or hangers you are willing to donate to Irving Middle, please drop them off in the main office. Our hope is to make locating student’s lost items easier so that we do not have so much at the end of each quarter. We thank you in advance for any donations you are able to make!

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

Principal

Stress Less Week @ Irving MS!

Our Student Services team has put together a variety of fun, optional, stress-reducing, self-care activities, spirit days and rockblock lessons for ALL Irving students during the week of April 24th-April 28th leading up to SOL testing dates. We want our students to NOT stress the TESTS and learn different ways of self-care. Check out the detailed spirit days and activities for Stress Less Week below:

New Event: Fentanyl and Other Drugs in FCPS - A Community Conversation with Free REVIVE! Narcan Training

Last month, FCPS hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. Most fatal overdoses in Fairfax County in recent years involved fentanyl.

FCPS will hold a second event with new information focused on the opioid crisis in Fairfax County Public Schools. The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Woodson High School. Families and students will learn how, as a community, we can partner  to reduce the impact of these harmful—and often deadly—drugs. All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

Childcare will be available. Transportation will also be available from select schools throughout the county. View the registration page for details.

Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and get help for yourself or loved ones.

Library News

This Wednesday, author Stephanie Bodeen will spend the day at Irving.  Many students will be attending one of three planned presentations throughout the day.  Ms. Bodeen will talk about two of her novels that many Irving students have read and will help to lead a Writing Workshop for some creative writing students.  We look forward to her visit.  It is a wonderful opportunity for students to hear about what it’s like to write as a career choice, and to hear background stories of tales from her novels.

–Mary Ann Monk, Irving MS Librarian

News from the PTA

PTA Board Elections -THANK YOU to the awesome parents who stepped up to be the PTA Exec Team nominating committee. We have a nominal slate, as the President, Treasurer and Vice President are happy to return, but we can’t have a PTA without a Secretary. (PS – the secretary does not write this every week; you can blame the VP for that). Let’s make this a competitive nail-biter of an election! If interested, please send an email to IrvingPTANomCommittee@gmail.com or just complete this form (copy and paste the link) - tinyurl.com/WIMSPTANom.

Didn’t turn in your receipts from Glory Days? It’s not too late! Dig to the bottom of your purse, take a pic and send it to irvingmspta@gmail.com (easiest) or send the physical receipt in to the school.

WE NEED TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY VOLUNTEERS!! Want to volunteer but not get into a long-term commitment? Help us appreciate our awesome teachers May 8 – 12. Quick, easy, high-impact help…..and fun! We would love a leader for each day and you’re not alone – we will brainstorm and plan together. Email us at IrvingMSPTA@gmail.com

Spirit wear will be delivered within the next 2 weeks (we expect sooner).

OUR LAST MEETING IS MAY 9TH – join us! That is where (we hope) there will be a NAIL BITER of an election and we will elect the next PTA exec committee!
