Message from Ms. Kearns
Dear Lake Braddock Families,
Next week, our SGA students are hosting Stress Less Week as the students prepare for testing. More details will be shared with the students, but they have some fun events planned. See the flyer below.
It was exciting to see our athletes commit to their colleges at Signing Day on Wednesday.
Finally, please remember that there is no school on Friday due to the Eid al-Fitr holiday. I wish those who celebrate Eid Mubarak.
Go Bruins! Lindsey Kearns

Calendar Reminder-Eid al-Fitr April 20/21
Eid al-Fitr, also known as small Eid, marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.Muslims congregate that morning for Eid prayers. It is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited. The most common way to wish someone a Happy Eid al-Fitr is Eid Mubarak, which means “blessed feast” (or festival). Read more at Britannica.com.

What is chronic absenteeism at LBSS and FCPS?
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing ten percent or more of the academic year for any reason, including excused absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions. Based on a 180-day school year, that means approximately 18 days per year or 2 to 3 days per month.
Excused absences count toward chronic absenteeism! We recognize that some absences are unavoidable, but absences for any reason can affect your child’s success.
How does chronic absenteeism impact your child?
- Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.
- Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with schoolwork, dealing with peer conflicts, or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available.
- Chronic absenteeism is among the strongest predictors of students dropping out of high school.
- Freshman who miss 10 or more days per semester are at increased risk of failing at least 2 classes during their freshman year.

Proposed Updates to the Student Rights and Responsibilities Document
FCPS is in the process of updating the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document for the 2023-24 School Year. If you haven’t already, please provide feedback on the proposed changes by 8 p.m. Friday, April 21. Please check your email for a message from Fairfax County Public Schools, dated Tuesday, April 18, which contains the survey link.
The SR&R provides clear expectations for student behavior, responses to that behavior, and support that may be needed. Our goal is to ensure each and every student's right to an education in a safe, civil, and caring environment.
New Event: Fentanyl and Other Drugs in FCPS - A Community Conversation with Free REVIVE! Narcan Training
Last month, FCPS hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. Most fatal overdoses in Fairfax County in recent years involved fentanyl.
FCPS will hold a second event with new information focused on the opioid crisis in Fairfax County Public Schools. The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Woodson High School. Families and students will learn how, as a community, we can partner to reduce the impact of these harmful—and often deadly—drugs. All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.
Childcare will be available. Transportation will also be available from select schools throughout the county. View the registration page for details.
Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and get help for yourself or loved ones.
No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for High School Students Now Available
FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to offer virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior are able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist. Teletherapy is available Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. The first step for parents is to provide information through an opt-in form. Visit FCPS’ Teletherapy webpage for details.

Save the Date! Safety and Security Town Hall
On Monday, May 8, FCPS will hold a town hall to discuss our approach to safety and security and the work we do every day to keep our schools safe. FCPS staff and experts will review our risk assessment processes, the physical measures we already have in place to protect our students and staff, pilot programs to detect vaping, and how we communicate and collaborate with our partners when there is an incident at our schools. Please stay tuned for additional details.
