Parent Volunteers Needed for AP Exams

  • AP testing is quickly approaching and Student Services needs parent volunteers to serve as proctors for the duration of each AP test. Your support is essential to our test security and ability to implement a successful program.
  • AP testing will take place May 1-5 and 8-12 during both morning (8:00am to 12:30pm) and afternoon (12:00pm to 4:00pm) blocks. Review the testing schedule and available volunteer slots on our Sign Up page (Note: Parents/guardians cannot proctor a test that their student is taking.)
  • Questions? Contact Alice Whitener at alwhitener@fcps.edu

Spring Giving Day

  • Saturday, April 29 is Spring Giving Day.  All Madison families are invited to stop by the school cafeteria between 10am-12pm to pick up free food, school supplies, and other household products they may need for the spring season. All items are courtesy of the Madison Food Pantry. Contact Krista Cunningham for more details.

AP Exams and Cancellations

  • AP Exams are May 1 to 12. All students are expected to take their exams. If a student would like to cancel their exam(s), please complete this 2023 AP Cancellation Form. Please know you are still responsible for all AP exam fees because all exams have been ordered. Families were billed in MySchoolBucks in December 2022. As a reminder, for AP exams 7 or more, a student is charged a $96 nonrefundable exam fee. There is no additional fee to cancel exams. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Anderson (abanderson@fcps.edu).

SOLs

  • Students and the enrolling parent were sent SOL test notifications last week from Mrs. Frate. The Spring 2023 testing calendar can be found here. All testing will begin at 8:10. Students will receive an email with their exact testing location approximately one week before testing.
  • As a reminder, students are scheduled to take a SOL test only if they need a verified credit for graduation and/or for federal participation requirements. Federal participation requirements require ALL students to take one math SOL, the Biology SOL, and the Reading SOL (English 11 and AP Lang) while in high school.
  • More information about SOL testing can be found on the JMHS website.
  • Students MUST use their FCPS laptops for SOLs. Please make sure that your student’s device is being brought to school on a regular basis to ensure it is getting the proper updates. Any student that is having issues with their device should bring it to the TLC (room 115) as soon as possible. Loaners will be available for students who do not have an FCPS device on the day of testing. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our assessment coach, Mrs. Frate (jlfrate@fcps.edu) or your child’s counselor.

Gravel Lot Parking

  • The gravel lots in the front of the building are part of Madison’s school lots and require a gravel lot pass to park in them. Students who park there without a pass will be issued a warning. Second violations will be issued a ticket. Multiple violations can result in tickets and the use of a car boot.

FCPS DIVISION MESSAGES

Community Meeting on the Dangers of Fentanyl

  • Opioid overdoses are on the rise across the country, including in Fairfax County. Most fatal overdoses in Fairfax County in recent years involved fentanyl. Last month, FCPS hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.
  • The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Woodson High School. FCPS principals and staff will share what is happening in our schools and give updates on the work to prevent substance misuse and educate our students.
  • Transportation will be available from select schools throughout the county. Transportation information can be found once you begin the registration process
  • Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and get help for yourself or loved ones.

Medicaid Enrollment Underway

  • If you have Medicaid/FAMIS/CHIP health insurance, the Medicaid Enrollment Processes began in March.
  • The Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) (Virginia Medicaid) has started to review Medicaid members’ health coverage to determine whether members are eligible for coverage. DMAS will not cancel or reduce coverage for members without asking for updated information, but they need your help to make this a smooth process.
  • Make sure your current mailing address, email, and phone numbers are up-to-date so that important information about your coverage gets to you. Update your contact information today online at commonhelp.virginia.gov, or by calling Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282 or your local Department of Social Services.
  • If you need any assistance or have any questions, contact Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282 or your local Department of Social Services.

No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for High School Students Now Available!

  • FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to offer virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior are able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist. Teletherapy is available Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. The first step for parents is to provide information through an opt-in form. Visit FCPS’ Teletherapy webpage for details.

Proposed Updates to the Student Rights and Responsibilities Document

  • FCPS is in the process of updating the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document for the 2023-24 School Year. The SR&R provides clear expectations for student behavior, responses to that behavior, and support that may be needed. Parents/caregivers, please check your email for a link from FCPS regarding a brief survey on proposed changes to the SR&R. The survey will close at 8 p.m., on Friday, April 21.  All responses to the survey are anonymous. The information provided will be used to revise the SR&R document that is presented to the School Board for approval in June.

One School | One Community | One World

Madison High School strives to create and maintain an identity affirming learning environment where our students embrace, support, and encourage each other where multiple forms of identity (i.e. race, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, or disability) are recognized and regarded as assets for teaching and learning. We work to ensure school is a place where students feel safe and can be themselves. We do not tolerate hate speech, racist speech, bias, or acts of discrimination in our school. We want all students to feel a sense of belonging. We want to see all students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We are committed to learning, growing, and building the best Madison High School for all our students. We are One School - One Community - One World.
