Student Services

A copy of your child’s course requests for next year were mailed home. Please review the course requests selected carefully, and contact your child’s counselor ASAP if there are any errors. Course requests can always be viewed online in SIS ParentVUE or StudentVUE (click “Course Request” on the menu on the left hand side).

If there are no errors on your child’s course request list then you do not need to contact the counselor. If your child applied for an Academy class, he/she should have received an email from the Academy to their FCPSschools account notifying them of whether they were accepted or not. If accepted, the academy class will be added to your child’s course request list in the coming days (but may not be reflected on the list that was mailed home). If you have any questions, please contact your child’s counselor.

Host a French Student from July 6 to 28!

Seeking Host Families

Join other host families in welcoming fifteen French students ages 15 to 17 to our community for a short visit to make new friends, visit Washington, D.C., experience the American way of life, and improve their English. Host families will enjoy a unique, rewarding, educational, cultural, and fun summer experience!

Students will arrive at Dulles International Airport on July 6th, and will need host family volunteers to provide a spare bed, three meals a day, and a willingness to welcome a student into the normal rhythm and activities of their home for three weeks in this State Department approved homestay program.

Sightseeing trips to Washington, D.C., originating at the Vienna Metro Station, will be provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the French students and any interested host siblings.

The other days of the week are for the student to spend time with you, their host family, immersed in the American way of life. To help hosts juggle hosting with vacations, the student can travel with their host family on vacation or two families can share the hosting of one teen.

Don't miss this invaluable summer experience! If you are interested in hosting one of these students, please contact WTW HS parent, Kathleen DeCarlo, today at kdecarlo@verizon.net or 703-388-6525 for more information.

Woodson Drama

Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors is the dark rock musical that grabbed audiences in the 80’s, and now it’s back at Woodson and bigger than ever! The musical centers on a hapless flower shop worker, Seymour, and his new exotic plant that happens to have a...particular diet. The mere presence of the plant in the window quickly brings traffic to the small shop, and the owner, Mushnik, promotes Seymour because of it. Seymour even finally catches the interest of Audrey, his coworker who's been stuck in a relationship with a sadistic dentist, Orin. All, it seems, because of the plant. But the plant's appetite continues to grow and grow. And it demands MORE! Surely this Faustian thing will stay in its pot and not cause trouble as long as Seymour keeps it happy, right?

Performances:
Friday, May 5th at 7pm
Saturday, May 6th at 2pm and 7pm
Friday, May 12th at 7pm
Sunday, May 14th at 7pm

CAVS SPORTS

Girls Lacrosse

Over spring break, the Woodson Varsity Lady Cavs traveled to Florida to compete against several out of state teams. During their trip Woodson had games against Satellite High School and Viera High School.  The Cavs defeated the SHS Scorpions 15 - 8.  The second game against the VHS Hawks was much tougher, but Woodson came out victorious winning 16-15.

Girls LAX

After spring break, Woodson Varsity and JV girls hosted the Fairfax Lions last Tuesday for senior night.  After the JV Cavs beat Fairfax JV 16 –1, Woodson honored the seniors and their families by recounting some of their favorite lax team memories.  Woodson’s graduating seniors are Elizabeth Stribling (Mary Washington), Amelia Ulcek (Undecided), Caitlin Tran (James Madison University), Genna Cooke (Youngstown State), Mia Zganjar (American University), Jillian Ferrari (Georgia Tech), Sophia White (Susquehanna University), Sophie Raynal Kosecka (Undecided), Arianna Rizzo (Shenandoah University), and Bristol Sine (Thomas College).  The seniors put on a show on both sides of the field. Woodson beat Fairfax 17–3 with the seniors tallying most of the goals in the game.

Next up for the Lady Cavs is the Stallions this Tuesday night at South County High School.

Varsity Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball team improved its record to 4-2 with a 12-2 victory over Alexandria City the Thursday before Spring Break.

Woodson was led by Junior pitcher Cece Temple who pitched a complete game giving up only 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 7.

Offensively, the Lady Cavs pounded out 12 hits. Junior Emma Fleming went 4-4 at bat with a double and drove in 3 runs. Sophomore Penny Elliott had a home run and triple, also driving in 3 runs. Junior Elle Foglio had a hit and drove in 2 runs.

Girls Tennis

Hamrock 3 Generations

Three generations of tennis meet in W.T. Woodson girls’ win over Fairfax (photo courtesy of Washington Post)

Following are excerpts from Aaron Credeur’s Washington Post story on Wednesday, April 12th –

As W.T. Woodson senior Katie Hamrock walked off the court after her 10-2 singles win against Fairfax’s Maggie Tong on Wednesday, she was greeted with hugs and congratulations from the opposing team’s coach and her own.  Both coaches had an interest in Hamrock’s success. They are, after all, family: Katie’s mom, Susan, is the coach at Woodson, and her grandmother Pat Greason is an assistant coach at Fairfax.

“Having my mom as my coach keeps the family fun and the rivalry [with my grandmother] keeps it interesting,” Katie said. “They’re both very competitive.”

In the Cavaliers’ victory at Fairfax on Wednesday, Katie got another chance to spark a bit of family rivalry. Her win at No. 6 singles was met with several hard-fought wins for the Lions, including a tight No. 1 singles match in which Fairfax’s Marianna Pirmatova beat Joselyn Limbago of Woodson.

The doubles matches decided the outcome. Katie returned to the court to notch another victory with freshman Mackenzie Truong to secure the 6-3 team win.

With Katie nearing graduation and Hamrock set to retire, this season is the last chance for all three to compete together.

Community Meeting on the Dangers of Fentanyl

One Pill Can Kill

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid and Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis hosted nearly 400 families, staff, and community members in March for a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.

The conversation will continue on next Monday, April 24, with our next community meeting on the critical topic of fentanyl danger and opioid awareness, hosted at Woodson. Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for updates as they become available. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and how to get help for yourself or loved ones.

Update Your Emergency Care Information Through weCare@school

Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system, to parents/caregivers who have registered for their own parent account. weCare helps manage emergency medical information by allowing parents to enter and update their children’s medical data online at their convenience. That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive eNotify communications from the district and their child’s school. eNotify is the communications tool for FCPS emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closings and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent via email, text, and occasionally phone.

Learn more about updating your emergency care information.
