Greetings Irving Families!

We have officially wrapped up the 3rd quarter and I am so proud of the growth our students have shown this year. On Monday or Wednesday of this coming week, students will have the opportunity to talk about their growth in Rock Block with their advisory teacher and some peers as they share their first Portrait of a Graduate Presentation of Learning (POG POL). The Portrait of a Graduate attributes/skills students could choose from during this first presentation are below. Please be sure to ask your child which attribute/skill they selected and have them share what evidence they picked to show growth. During the presentation they will be sharing a statement of growth (I grew), sharing a collection of evidence (I can prove it), and providing a reflection on Portrait of a Graduate (Here’s why it matters to me.) Students will have a second opportunity to share their growth in June.

Attributes/Skills for April POG POL:

  • Communicator – I plan, organize, and revise my writing for an intended audience by blending ideas and concepts.
  • Collaborator – I work with my team to accomplish tasks.
  • Ethical & Global Citizen – I understand that there are cultures and perspectives other than my own when considering issues.
  • Creative & Critical Thinker – I use evidence to support my conclusions.
  • Goal-Directed & Resilient Individual – I can correctly identify the challenges I face and adjust to overcome them.

April is the month we celebrate our Military Connected Families and students. Next week, we will honor our families through a spirit week. Please see the flyer above so you can help your child remember what color to wear each day. Monday, students should wear Yellow!

As we look forward to the start of the 4th quarter, we want to make sure we are beginning with positive behavior. We are seeing an increase in students using social media to post hurtful and negative pictures and messages about their peers. While the posting is being done after school hours, the messages are impacting our teaching and learning environment - students are talking about what is being posted, rumors spread, feelings are being hurt, and it is all a distraction from our purpose at school. Please take a look at your child’s social media accounts to see what is being posted as well as the comments your child is receiving and making. FCPS has a great resource regarding Social Media Best Practices for Students - please take a look. Now is also a good time to take another look at the Digital Citizenship for Families resources and information. If you have not signed up for Lightspeed Parent Reports, I highly recommend this service.

We appreciate your partnership in helping our students navigate and use social media in a positive way.

Take Care!

Principal

Library News

The long-awaited visit from author Stephanie Bodeen will soon be here.  Many students plan to attend one of Ms. Bodeen’s presentations or workshops when she travels from Wisconsin to visit us on April 26.  We look forward to hearing about what it’s like to write as a career choice, and to hear background stories of tales from her novels.

Students who are interested in attending presentations and have not already signed up, need to check-in with Ms. Monk in the library by Thursday, April 20.

–Mary Ann. Monk, Librarian

News from the PTA

LET’S EAT and SUPPORT KEENE MILL PLAZA! The next RESTAURANT NIGHT is on Tuesday, April 18th at BGR in the Keene Mill Plaza. This one is in-person, so here’s what you do: you take your Middle Schooler and whoever else you want to feed, and you go to BGR anytime on the 18th and order food and pay. Then you sit down and while you’re waiting for your food, you take a pic of that receipt and send it to IrvingMSPTA@gmail.com, because 15% of the sales are going to Irving! Now, pat yourself on the back because you’re all going to eat awesome burgers and fries, you supported Irving AND BGR, AND your Middle Schooler is being a POSITIVE INFLUENCE AT THE PLAZA! Great job!

PTA Board Elections -THANK YOU to the awesome parents who stepped up to be the PTA Exec Team nominating committee. We have a nominal slate, as the President, Treasurer and Vice President are happy to return, but we can’t have a PTA without a Secretary. (PS – the secretary does not write this every week; you can blame the VP for that). Let’s make this a competitive nail-biter of an election! If interested, please send an email to IrvingPTANomCommittee@gmail.com or just complete this form (copy and paste the link) - tinyurl.com/WIMSPTANom.

Didn’t turn in your receipts from Glory Days? It’s not too late! Dig to the bottom of your purse, take a pic and send it to irvingmspta@gmail.com (easiest) or send the physical receipt in to the school.

WE NEED TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY VOLUNTEERS!! Want to volunteer but not get into a long-term commitment? Help us appreciate our awesome teachers May 8 – 12. Quick, easy, high-impact help…..and fun! We would love a leader for each day and you’re not alone – we will brainstorm and plan together. Email us at IrvingMSPTA@gmail.com

Spirit wear will be delivered within the next 2 weeks (we expect sooner).

OUR LAST MEETING IS MAY 9TH – join us! That is where (we hope) there will be a NAIL BITER of an election and we will elect the next PTA exec committee!
