From the Library
April is National Poetry Month, National Arab American Heritage Month, AND National School Library Month! The library is celebrating all of these events!
Over the past several weeks, we have provided an alternate location for our students who are fasting during the month of Ramadan and do not wish to spend their lunch period in the cafeteria. Eid Mubarak to all of our families who celebrate!
As we approach summer, SYNC Audiobooks for Teens returns with their free audiobook program. Their free season starts April 27 and runs through early August. Two titles are available for a week, and change each Thursday. Once you’ve downloaded a title, it’s yours to keep forever. You can get the complete list of titles, and the week that they are available, here.
We love to work with classes to develop research skills, and to help students create products that show their learning. Are your students conducting research in their classes? Please remind your students that there are fantastic research supports available through their HHS Library course on Schoology and that they can always reach us at hhs_library@fcps.edu to schedule one-on-one support.

Students who do not plan to attend school the entire day will need to submit an AP Testing Attendance Form for early check out or late check in on days they are taking an AP test. The attendance forms will be available in Student Services (Room M149) or from your AP teacher. Please note that a separate permission form will be required for each AP test. Phone calls or notes will not be allowed, nor will they be accepted in lieu of a completed AP Testing Attendance Form. Any student who does not submit a completed form will be marked as unexcused for their morning or afternoon classes. Students who plan to attend school the entire day do not need to submit an attendance form on the days they are taking an AP test.

Sports Physicals
Herndon High School will be hosting their Sports Physicals on Monday, May 15th. Take advantage and cross this off your to do list for next year now while supporting the Athletic Training program! The physicals currently on file expire on June 30th, a new physical is needed for next year. After June 30th, students will not be permitted to participate in any team related activities (other than interest meetings) until a new VHSL physical form has been submitted. You are always welcome to get a sports physical through your family physician or an urgent care center, but this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser.
Did you know? This is an incredibly important night for us because FCPS only provides the athletic training personnel, not the supplies we need to help your kids. The money earned is used to purchase the supplies that allow us to help our student-athletes stay healthy and play to their highest potential. Every piece of gauze, glove, roll of tape, ice bag, bandage, nose plug, brace, crutch…everything you see us use is purchased through the funds earned at this annual event. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Just for reference- 1 physical does not even cover the cost of 1 case of tape (we go through 80-100 cases per year).
Physicals are $50- payable by cash or check on site or pre-paid through MySchoolBucks prior to the event. All details will be provided in a confirmation email when appointments are made. Additional donations or ‘sponsorships’ for student-athletes who may not be able to afford this opportunity are always welcome. We ensure forms are complete and there are no issues (unless a doctor notices something that warrants further medical attention). All forms will be put on file so kids are ready to go- you’ll just need to complete online registration for whatever activity they choose.
Click here to make an appointment-: 2023 Athletic Physical Registration. You will receive a confirmation email within 48 business hours of scheduling.

 Alcohol, Sexual Assault, and Consent
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. People ages 12-34 are at the highest risk for rape and sexual assault (RAINN). The majority of sexual assault victims are under the age of 30. One out of every six American women has been the victim/survivor of an attempted or completed sexual assault. One out of every ten males are sexual assault victims.; .
Alcohol can play a part in sexual assault. Alcohol reduces inhibitions and alcohol consumption by perpetrators and victims tends to co-occur, meaning, when one of them is drinking, the other one is generally drinking as well. At least one half of all violent crimes involve the use of alcohol. Although a person’s alcohol consumption is one risk factor for sexual assault, they are in no way responsible for what happened to them.
Sexual violence is any type of unwanted sexual contact. This includes words and actions of a sexual nature against a person’s will and without their consent.
