Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you had a wonderful spring break!  Our staff members have returned refreshed and are ready for a productive 4th quarter.  The last quarter of the year is filled with many fun learning activities that often take place outside.  We are thrilled with the ways our PTA is working to beautify our outdoor learning spaces for students and staff along with all the amazing lessons that are being taught about our region, our land and the earth.

We realize that the warmer weather brings many activities and schedules get very busy.  We ask for your help as we encourage our students to finish the year strong as we remain focused on learning. We also recognize that getting to after-school activities can be challenging with our late bell schedule.  Please make sure to notify the office if your child’s dismissal procedures will be changing so that we can make sure to get them to the correct destination.  Please help your children get plenty of rest and arrive on time to school as well as bring a healthy snack and water bottle each day!  Thank you for partnering with us throughout this last quarter of the 22-23 school year.

Students will be dismissed 2 hours early this Thursday, April 13 as the 3rd quarter ends and there will be no school for students on Friday, April 14 while teachers have a workday.  We hope to see many of you at our Earth Day event on Saturday, April 15th.

Have a great week!

Peace.

School Events & Information

Spring Photos

Spring Portraits are now available to view and order online at vosphoto.com/uc.  All orders placed by April 23 will include free shipping and will be delivered to the school a few weeks later.  Orders placed after this deadline will be sent to the student’s home.  Please remember, the online code is the Student ID Number.  Questions or concerns about student portraits can be sent to underclass@vosphoto.com.

Intentions for Next Year

If your child will NOT be attending Marshall Road School or his/her base middle school next year, please complete the Student Intention for the Next School Year form and return it to mmarcumkoshu@fcps.edu. If you find out later you will be moving, please contact us, so we can update our database.  A hard copy of this form will be sent home in Tuesday Folders tomorrow.

Kindergarten Orientation

Kindergarten orientation is this Thursday, April 13, 3:00-4:00 pm.  Details can be found here.

Yearbook Sales

Online yearbook sales will be accepted through April 14.  Cash pre-orders will be extended through April 21.  Online orders can be placed using this Yearbook Order Form.  If you would prefer to pay $20.00 by cash or check, make checks payable to Marshall Road Elementary School, place cash or check in the envelope sent home in Tuesday folders several weeks ago.  Each yearbook is packed with candid photos, memories of the 2022-2023 school year, staff photos and individual photos of each student by grade level.  There will be a limited number of yearbooks available for purchase after all the prepaid orders are distributed during the last week of school.

MRES Library Volunteers Needed

The MRES Library is looking for parent volunteers!  If you are interested in volunteering in the Marshall Road Library, please fill out this form.  Volunteer tasks will include shelving books, checking books in and out, and helping students find books. No library experience is necessary in order to volunteer.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Librarian, Lisa Hoffman: lahoffman@fcps.edu.

PTA Update

Marshall Road Bike Train

The Marshall Road Bike Train starts up again this Tuesday, April 11!  The Bike Train departs Meadow Lane Park at 8:45 am.  Students may meet at Meadow Lane or join the Bike Train along the route.  If you have a student joining the Bike Train, please consider signing up to chaperone some of the rides!  See all Bike Train details here or check out this flyer.

If your student rides in the morning, please make sure they know how they are getting home in the afternoon and where they will meet you (at school, at home, or at Meadow Lane Park).  If they normally take the bus, you must inform the MRES office that they will be biking home by emailing Jennifer Heflin at jfheflin@fcps.edu.

Walking Wednesday

Enjoy the spring weather by walking to school on Wednesday, April 12.  Walking promotes health, fitness, and time together.  It also alleviates traffic congestion during the busy morning drop-offs.  Remember to bring your punch cards.  If a student participates in at least 6 Walking Wednesdays during the year, they will be entered into a raffle for a prize at the end of the year.   If you would like to volunteer to mark punch cards, please sign up here.

Join Us for our next PTA Meeting

We hope you can join on Wednesday, April 12 at 7:00 pm for our virtual PTA meeting.  At the meeting, we will discuss how to introduce your child to new books with diverse characters and storylines to help expand your child’s understanding of the world around them.  We will explore how books can serve as “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” to reflect our own experiences, give a glimpse inside the lives of others, and offer another world into which we can escape.  We will also be nominating members for the 2023-2024 PTA Board and discussing plans for the remainder of the school year.  Please use this zoom link to join.  Meeting ID: 870 7770 0972 Passcode: 319256

Family Reading Challenge

This is the final week of the PTA’s Family Reading Challenge!  The goal is to share resources and activities to help diversify your home libraries and discover new books to help expand your child’s understanding of the world around them.  This is part of the National PTA Family Reading Experience, sponsored by Office Depot OfficeMax.

This week we are focusing on avoiding stories that depict people in need of assistance, be it financial or physical, as somehow lesser than the whole (Goal 5 from the National PTA’s Family Guide to Selecting Diverse Books).  To explore this goal, for early elementary students, we recommend the book Maddi’s Fridge by Lois Brandt.  For upper elementary students, we recommend the books Lucky Broken Girl by Ruth Behar and Shelter by Christie Matheson.  We invite you to join us to learn and discuss more on this topic at our PTA meeting on April 12.

Marshall Road’s Earth Day Celebration

The PTA will be hosting an Earth Day celebration this Saturday, April 15, 9:00 am-1:00 pm.  We will have lots of great activities and would love to see you there!  Compost Crew will provide information on composting; The Town of Vienna will answer questions on its recycling program; Noctiluna will help upcycle your old or damaged textiles; and MRES Bike Train leaders will give an overview of the Bike Train route and how to participate.

We will also prep the Marshall Road gardens and grounds for spring, so plan to bring your gardening tools if you'd like to help!  Please consider signing up here if you plan to help with the gardens.  The community is welcome to bring a picnic blanket and either pack a lunch or purchase food from Empanadas Mendoza, Taqueira Sabrositos, or Ben & Jerry’s Flyer.
