1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

It is hard to believe that three quarters of the school year are complete! There are so many great things happening at Chantilly each and every day as we remained focused on engaging our students. supporting their growth, and elevating all voices. It is a joy to connect with our Charger community. Here are a few highlights from the past week:

Students:

  • Early in the week I met with the Class of 2023 Board to plan end of the year senior activities, convocation and graduation, 8 weeks to graduation and counting. Graduation will be held at Eagle Bank arena at 2 PM on June 7.
  • We are so proud of our students in the Secondary Transition to Employment Program (STEP) who shared their Career Presentations with their families and peers this week and our students in our Category B special education program who interviewed staff to practice their communication skills. Amazing to see Portrait of a Graduate Communicator and Collaborator attributes in action.
  • Students won the day at the Volley Brawl tournament this week. They defeated the faculty team. A great time was had by all.
  • It was my pleasure to attend the recognition and presentation of a resolution in honor of our Chantilly Student Media at the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting. Our student Media were recognized with the First Amendment Press Freedom Award by the Journalism Education Association for actively supporting, teaching, and protecting First Amendment rights and responsibilities (read more below).

Staff:

  • We are so grateful to our staff for their great work as they focus on wrapping up the third quarter and plan for the end of the year. Did you know that on our early release days and work days, staff are hard at work and engaged in professional learning, assessing and planning?
  • I am amazed by the leadership and collaboration of our Instructional Council and Collaborative Team Leaders as they work together to focus on student support and practices that promote growth and learning. Thank you for all you do!

Community:

  • April is the Month of the Military Child and Virginia’s Purple Up! Day is Wednesday, April 19. We will be celebrating our military connected students on April 19 with a light breakfast and time to connect during Charger Time. The FCPS Purple Up! t-shirt is available for order now through March 16 here!  Purple Up! FCPS!
  • I look forward to being a part of our Chantilly Pyramid Art Show next week. We cannot wait to see our school transformed into a gallery displaying outstanding artwork from our students K-12.
  • Performing Arts will be in full swing next week with our spring production of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and Drum Line performances.

I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!  I hope to see you at CHS very soon.

5.  CHS Performing Arts Presents:  The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

Fifteen year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.

6. Community Meeting on the Dangers of Fentanyl

Last month, the division hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.

The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Woodson High School. Transportation will be available from select schools throughout the county. View the registration page for details.

Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and how to get help for yourself or loved ones.

8.  Hidden in Plain Sight

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

The hands-on portion is followed by an educational section that includes a PowerPoint presentation detailing the red flag props that the room contained and how it is indicative of — or used in — risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life.  Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!

Join us Thursday, April 27th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Chantilly High School (Library).  Click here for more information.
