Fifteen French high school students will be visiting the Washington, D.C. area this summer, integrating into the community, meeting new friends and improving their English. They will arrive at Dulles International Airport on July 6 for a three-week program, and each will need a host family. Host families provide a bed, three meals a day, and a willingness to welcome a student into the normal rhythm and activities of their home. Compass USA will provide sightseeing trips on weekdays to Washington, D.C. for the French students and any interested host siblings. It’s an unforgettable summer experience!

CAVS SPORTS
Varsity Baseball
In the Cavs game against West Springfield on March 27, junior Nate Moore got his first varsity start and pitched two singles and a walk, thanks to some nifty defense. Moore made short work of the Spartans over the next two innings pitching around one walk. Woodson tacked on another run in the top of the fourth.
West Springfield rallied to knot things at 4-4. Junior Brandon Spratt relieved during the inning and recorded two outs to escape further damage. Spratt pitched around an error in the fifth to keep the game tied.
The Spartans rallied again in the bottom of the sixth. Spratt recorded the first out on a pop-up to second but the next four batters reached base on an error, two walks and a single, plating two runs. A two-out single plated two more runs giving West Springfield an 8-4 advantage heading into the seventh.
Woodson did not give in as Gordon led off with a single, Conklin doubled, and Viccora walked to load the bases with no outs. Junior Co-Captain Andrew Perks hit a sacrifice fly for one run and Shelhorse followed with a single, narrowing the gap to 8-6, which was the final score.
The Cavaliers hosted Lake Braddock on March 28. The Bruins jumped out to an early lead. Shelhorse, Smallwood, and Moore hit consecutive singles to start the Woodson second, but the Bruin pitcher bore down and struck out the next three batters.
The fourth featured a shining moment for Woodson as Blumenthal came in to pitch and participated in a double-play by fielding a comebacker, throwing to Sophomore Catcher Dean Reynolds who then threw to Shelhorse at first for the 1-2-3 twin-killing! It was too little too late as Lake Braddock won 11-0 in the five-inning contest.
The Cavaliers looked to bounce back on March 30 when they hosted Alexandria City. Woodson struck first as Viccora reached base on a one-out error and Shelhorse drilled a double to right. Alexandria came right back though, scoring three runs in the second on a single, double, and an error. The Titans put up five more runs in the fifth behind five hits and two walks for an 8-1 lead. Junior Carter Spera relieved during the inning striking out two and stranding two, to escape further damage. He did an outstanding job in relief, striking out seven batters and giving up just one hit in four innings of work. Junior Sam Koutsouftikis came on with a runner on in the seventh and retired all three batters he faced. But the Cavs couldn’t narrow the gap and fell 8-3.
Varsity Softball
The Woodson Varsity Softball team improved its record to 4-2 with a 12-2 victory over Alexandria City the Thursday before Spring Break.
Woodson was led by Junior pitcher Cece Temple who pitched a complete game giving up only 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 7.
Offensively, the Lady Cavs pounded out 12 hits. Junior Emma Fleming went 4-4 at bat with a double and driving in 3 runs. Sophomore Penny Elliott had a home run and triple, also driving in 3 runs. Junior Elle Foglio had a hit and drove in 2 runs.

Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.
Each student can submit a maximum of two pieces. Artwork does not have to be original for this competition, but it cannot have been submitted to our competition previously. Submissions can be dropped off at my District Office in Fairfax City.

Update Your Emergency Care Information Through weCare@school
Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system, to parents/caregivers who have registered for their own parent account. weCare helps manage emergency medical information by allowing parents to enter and update their children’s medical data online at their convenience. That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive eNotify communications from the district and their child’s school. eNotify is the communications tool for FCPS emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closings and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent via email, text, and occasionally phone.
Learn more about updating your emergency care information.
Community Meeting on the Dangers of Fentanyl
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid and Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis hosted nearly 400 families, staff, and community members in March for a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, with our next community meeting on the critical topic of fentanyl danger and opioid awareness, hosted at Woodson. Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for updates as they become available. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and how to get help for yourself or loved ones.
