Principals' Message
Greetings Family,
We can’t believe we are in the final quarter of the year! We are looking forward to our Science Fair/STEM Night at the end of the month, celebrating Autism Acceptance, and honoring our Military Connected Youth. Please keep an eye out for the creative ways we will be showing our school spirit this month.
As we begin to prepare for our end of year assessments, it is important that students are coming to school well rested and ready for the day. We encourage students on their days of testing to do their best and create a relaxed environment prior to beginning assessments. As a result testing will begin in the morning and it is important that you do not schedule any appointments requiring them to be picked up early on those days. Students cannot pause state assessments and finish the next day, so if you do have a conflict with schedules, please communicate with the teacher so we do not begin testing them on that day. If you are looking for ways to support your student in preparing please reach out to your child's classroom teacher and join us for a Parent Coffee on Friday, April 28th at 9:30am for more information about the SOL test. We are so proud of our students growth and effort this year.
At Gunston we work to develop classroom communities that are inclusive, respectful, and celebrate the unique strengths and personalities of each of its members. Even so, students may have missteps or disagreements with classmates.
In today’s society, we tend to use the word bullying interchangeably with “being mean.” Neither are ok. However, FCPS has a specific, 3-part definition of bullying.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.” If you have questions about bullying, or want to learn more about how FCPS responds to bullying accusations, please see this FCPS website reference or contact your partner principals or school counselors.
We look forward to our continued partnership through the remainder of the school year.
Warmly,
Ms. Rucinski & Mrs. Opie
First Grade enjoyed a beautiful morning at
Huntley Meadows Park.
