Next week is the spring break holiday for students and staff. No teachers or counselors will be working during this time. There will be a very small number of administrative and support staff members working next week. Office hours are from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM daily.

We hope all Edison family members have a restful, safe week, and we look forward to seeing students return to class on Monday, April 10.

Month of the Military Child

Purple Star School

Last year we proudly became a Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School for supporting military-connected students.  The FCPS community is celebrating the Month of the Military Child during April. We are excited to honor and recognize the resilience of our military-connected students during April.  EHS will be holding a spirit week in partnership with our SGA to celebrate this month; themes to be announced.

Band and Orchestra Trip to Orlando

trip 2

Members of the Thomas A. Edison Band and Orchestra completed a successful trip to Orlando, Florida last week.  They were able to go backstage of Epcot Park at Walt Disney World and work with a professional recording studio artist and conductor.  Upon the completion of the 2 ½ hour workshop, they were able to record two Disney melodies over official Disney animated movie scenes from Mulan and Tangled.  This is the first trip many of these students have taken with an Edison Performing group since before 2019. Thanks go to band director, Charlie Mitchell, and orchestra director, JR Jeerakul, for a successful trip.

Wellness Fair for Students

On Thursday, April 13, we will be hosting our first wellness fair at Edison!  It is an early release day, and students will spend the day in special activities hosted by teachers.  Sessions include activities such as crocheting, fitness, video games, charades, frisbee golf, board games, painting, dancing, and drawing, just to name a few!  Students will start he day with some team and relationship building in advisory, then attend their choice of two sessions (students had an opportunity to make their choices during English classes last week). They will then return to advisory to wrap up the day.  Grab and go lunch will be served prior to dismissal at 12:55. For questions, contact Student Services.

Wellness Fair

Community Meeting on Dangers of Fentanyl

Last month, the division hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.

The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, 6:30 to 8:00 PM, at Woodson High School. Transportation will be available from select schools throughout the county. View the registration page for details.

Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and how to get help for yourself or loved ones.

What is Binge Drinking?

Binge drinking refers to consuming a large amount of alcohol quickly.  It’s a practice that pushes up blood alcohol levels fast.  For men, binge drinking is typically five or more drinks in two hours.  Women reach a blood alcohol level of .08 or more with four drinks in two hours or less.

Why is binge drinking risky?

Teenagers who binge-drink even once are at higher risk of getting alcohol poisoning, which requires immediate medical attention. Drinking too much too quickly can affect breathing, heart rate, and body temperature and potentially lead to coma and death.

What can you do to help your child understand the dangers of drinking? Here are 10 ways to keep them safe:

  • Talk to your kids, not at your kids
  • Education is key
  • Help teens understand the risk
  • Get involved
  • Be a positive influence
  • Eliminate Temptation
  • Be aware of the warning signs
  • Establish clear rules
  • Teach refusal skills
  • Create and commit to a family pledge
