We are Better Together!
Dear Island Creek Community,
Thursday evening was simply amazing with our Authors and Artists event! Our Island Creek Crocs are creative authors and artists and it was so nice seeing many of our families as Island Creek is a wonderful community school.
As we head into Spring Break, Mrs. Baxter and I want to wish all of our Island Creek Families a healthy and restful break. Our school will be closed during Spring Break, and as such school staff members will not be replying to emails during the break in order to spend much needed time with family and friends.
Have a wonderful Spring Break and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday, April 10!

6th Grade All County Choral Festival
Congratulations to four of our talented 6th Graders for their performance in last Saturday’s 6th Grade All County Choral Festival with 670 sixth graders from FCPS. Also, thank you to our amazing Music Teachers, Sarah Laird and Deb Tien, for developing and leading these singers!

6th Graders Met a Professional Football Player
On Thursday morning, our 6th Grade students met and heard from Malik Carney, a professional football player for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Additionally, Mr. Carney has a younger 6th Grade brother at Island Creek, Romain! Mr. Carney attended the University of North Carolina and emphasized that it’s okay to make mistakes and we need to learn from them.
  
Spirit Week for the Month of the Military Child and Earth Week – April 17th through April 20th
Spirit Week for the Month of the Military Child and Earth Week is scheduled for April 17th through April 20th. Students and Staff are invited to wear the color matching each day’s theme to show their spirit! This year’s theme colors for both events align.

Monday, April 17 – Wear yellow to support our military personnel and families and show support for Watershed Day.

Tuesday, April 18 – Wear blue, red, green or camo to support your branch of service or wear green to show support for Zero Waste Day and Island Creek Elementary.

Wednesday, April 19 – Wear purple to show support for the Month of the Military Child Purple Up! Day and Climate Change Day.

Thursday, April 20 – Wear red to Remember Everyone Deployed and show support for Conservation Day.
Virginia’s Purple Up! Day is Wednesday, April 19
April is the Month of the Military Child, providing an opportunity to recognize and honor the service of Virginia’s youngest heroes, over 80,000 military connected children. Show support for the annual PURPLE UP DAY by wearing purple on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
Decorate a Pennant for This Is Us Multicultural Night
A copy of a paper pennant was sent home in students’ Thursday folders on March 30th. Please have your child decorate the pennant to represent your family’s culture and traditions or the cultures or traditions of a country you know well. Decorated pennants will be displayed at the Island Creek Elementary This Is Us Multicultural Night and we encourage all students to participate in this optional activity. Please have your child give completed pennants to his/her teacher by Friday, April 21st. Contact Jane Horowitz for questions.
This is Us Multicultural Night- Registration Extended to Friday, April 21
We hope everyone received our communication with information regarding our inaugural This is Us Multicultural Night to be held on Friday, April 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This event will be a celebration where our students and families can come together to learn about the variety of cultures, countries, and traditions represented at Island Creek. We encourage families to contribute something from your country of heritage or from a country you know well. We have numerous activities planned to include musical performances by our students. If you wish to prepare an activity or simply attend the event, please register online by Friday, April 21. We hope all our families are able to attend! Please email Jane Horowitz with questions.

This is Us Multicultural Spirit Day: Friday, April 28
As we gear up for our This is Us Multicultural Night, we are encouraging students and staff to wear heritage clothing/tee shirt representing a country of their choice!
Kindergarten and New Student Registration
We are excited to welcome our newest Crocs to Island Creek Elementary School for the 2023-24 school year!
Beginning March 1st, we will accept registrations on any school day between 9:00 AM-2:00 PM. Please call prior to arriving to make sure the registrar is available. You may begin this process by completing the Registration Intake Form.
If you have new neighbors or rising Kindergarteners in your neighborhood, please share this information with them
Kindergarten Orientation: April 13 (2:00-3:00)
Do you have a child who will be 5 years of age by September 30, 2023, and do you plan on sending them to kindergarten at Island Creek for the 2023-2024 school year? If so, we encourage you to attend our Kindergarten Orientation which will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2023 from 2:00-3:00 PM.
This event is intended for the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the rising kindergarten student. Parents/Guardians will hear a brief presentation by administration and rising kindergarteners will have an opportunity to visit a kindergarten classroom. Due to limited space, we ask that other grade level students not attend.
