Full STEAM Ahead!

Timber Lane ES' inaugural STEAM Day was a huge success! We are so thankful to the many people that made this happen; the entire TLES staff, our students, our families, our community sponsors, our FCPS colleagues, & US Department of Education staff. This event challenged students as engineers to find solutions to authentic real world problems through the Engineering Design Process. Our students were inspired and more than met the challenge!  Please check out the TLES Facebook and Twitter pages for video footage and a picture slideshow of the event!

There’s an easy five-step process outlined for parents looking to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.
  2. Identify your local school.
  3. Gather documents.
  4. Fill out forms.
  5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

Community Meeting on the Dangers of Fentanyl

opioids

Last month, the division hosted a conversation on the dangers of fentanyl. During this impactful event, audience members heard testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic and learned facts from medical experts and law enforcement representatives.

The conversation will continue on Monday, April 24, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Woodson High School. Transportation will be available from select schools throughout the county. View the registration page for details.

Visit our Opioid Awareness webpage for more information. Visit the Fairfax County Government webpage on opioids for information on how you can take action and how to get help for yourself or loved ones.

ESSER Funds Help Students Make Big Gains In Small Groups

Justin, a third-grader, struggled to identify most letters and their sounds in fall 2021 when students returned for the first year of fully in-person instruction since the pandemic began.  After a year of reading intervention services—supported by ESSER COVID relief funding—testing data maintained by his school show he’s made more than two years of progress in his reading skills in one academic year! Read more about how schools are overcoming pandemic-related challenges.

Spring Break COVID Test Kit Distribution

If your family is planning to travel or attend large gatherings over spring break, and you would like to ensure your child is healthy before returning to school, please contact us at 703-206-5300 to obtain a test kit in advance of spring break. Please note, testing is NOT required for students to return to school after break. However, you may want to test your student if they are symptomatic or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. Kits will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Update Parent Information in WeCare

Update Your Emergency Care Information Through weCare@school

Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system, to parents/caregivers who have registered for their own parent account. weCare helps manage emergency medical information by allowing parents to enter and update their children’s medical data online at their convenience. That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive eNotify communications from the district and their child’s school. eNotify is the communications tool for FCPS emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closings and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent via email, text, and occasionally phone.

Learn more about updating your emergency care information.

Attendance: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Attendance2

This year, spring break is April 3-7. We will be eager to welcome your children back in school on Monday, April 10. Their attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

FCPS Early Childhood and PreK Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools offers programs for the youngest learners through several programs.

  • PreK is for students 3-4 years old whose parents meet income requirements. Space is limited, and priority is given to 4 year olds to help them prepare for kindergarten.
  • Early Head Start is for infants, toddlers, and expectant mothers who meet income requirements.
  • Early Literacy Programs and Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) work with parents to help prepare their children for school.

Community liaisons are available to assist families with the registration process and answer any questions. For more information, visit the Early Childhood Registration webpage.
