Brain Injury Awareness Month

Brain Injury Month

The month of March is dedicated to Brain Injury Awareness Month.  In the United States, more than 5.3 million children and adults have a brain injury. That is about 1 in 60. Acquired brain injuries (ABI) are those that happen after birth and can result in physical, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive impairments. The primary causes of ABI are trauma, stroke, tumors, degenerative diseases, alcohol and other toxins, and lack of oxygen to the brain.

Key Center’s Music Performance

music performance

We were excited to welcome an FCPS film crew to our building Tuesday.  Music therapist, Johanna Horn, arranged a performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow for an adaptive resonating bell choir, made up of some of our 17-22 Program students.  Ms. Horn accompanied the students on the ukulele.  To facilitate active participation, some students accessed switches on which the bells had been recorded.  Other students used the resonating bells directly.  The performance will be featured during Dr. Reid's upcoming State of the Schools event. Details regarding the date and time of this event will be shared as they are received.
