March 2023 Newsletter from Principal Tam

Dear Westbriar Families,

Despite the fluctuation between the unseasonably warm and then cold, almost freezing temperatures we experienced in March, we hope April will bring more spring like temps and weather.  We had a lot of exciting events in March, here are just a few highlights:

5K Fun Run/Walk:  Thank you for the leadership of Mrs. Alsado and Mrs. Burgum in organizing a very successful 5k Fun Run/Walk held on March 18th.  We know many school staff and PTA members greatly contributed with the planning and setup of this successful in person event.  Dr. Reid, our Superintendent attended the 5k and enjoyed meeting many students, staff, and families.  Thank you Dr. Reid for coming out and supporting this community event!

Chorus Concert:  Thank you to Ms. Chernov, Ms. Auman, and Ms. Amro for preparing our 5th and 6th students as they put on a fabulous Chorus concert over two nights (March 14th and 15th).  We hope many if not all will continue to develop their musical talents into middle school.

Odyssey of the Mind:

1

Westbriar Elementary School had two student teams that participated in the Odyssey of the Mind Regional Tournament held on March 25 at Oakton High School.  Odyssey of the Mind (OM™) teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers.  OM also emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and so much more.  One of the great things about the program is that the students do EVERYTHING, from building sets and props, designing costumes, and writing the dialogue, with no outside assistance from other students, parents, coaches or other adults.  You can find more information about OM at www.odysseyofthemind.com (pictured are some members of Divisions 1 and 2 Westbriar teams).

Westbriar was represented by two teams.  Both teams competed on the same problem:  Vehicle Problem, Pirates and the Treasure.  The Spirit of the Problem is for the team to perform an original performance about a group of pirate characters that reclaim stolen treasure and return it to the Queen’s Kingdom. It will design and build a ride-on vehicle that is presented as a pirate ship. A Captain Character and an additional rider will maneuver the ship on a course and perform different functions. It will battle a sea monster and sustain damage before recovering and returning the Queen’s treasure. The performance will also include a song performed by the pirate characters, and an original pirate ship flag.

The Division 1 team consisted of Sonia Radheshwar, Madhavi Duruvu, Ridhi Guidia, Riya Guidia and Ishti Jain.

The Division 2 team consisted of Ryder Gee, Minh Phan, Ethan Aquilino, Arjun Arunkumar, Shlok Mehta, Dexter Delaney, and Aarav Dadbhawala.

Both teams finished in first place in their respective divisions and have advanced to the State Tournament which will be held at Tuscorora High School in Leesburg, VA on April 15, 2023.

We are so proud of the parents, coaches, and other community members supported both teams and we will be rooting for them on April 15th when they will compete at the State Tournament.

Here are some upcoming events, information, or reminders:

Spring Break Main Office Hours

Kindergarten Orientation 2023:  if you have a rising Kindergartener, you are invited to attend our in-person orientation.  It is scheduled for Thursday, April 13th from 3pm-4pm at Westbriar Elementary in our cafeteria.  Please contact Ms. Isu Revelo, School Registrar at irevelo@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Class Assignment Parent Input 2023:  Completion of this form is OPTIONAL. If you have information about your child you would like to share, please take a few moments to answer the questions below.  We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success and we carefully consider each child's strengths and needs during this process.

Please DO NOT request specific teachers as changes in staff may occur and classes are also impacted by an increase/decrease in enrollment.  It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral information.  Keep in mind that TEACHERS AND STAFF MAY REVIEW  this survey in order to gain additional insight of your child.

All forms must be submitted by May 19, 2023.  We will not consider late submissions as we would have moved forward with the student grouping process for the upcoming school year.
