Happy Spring Break!
Dear GBW Families,
Mr. Cook and I want to remind you that Friday is the last day of school before our Spring Break! There will be no school for students April 3rd-7th. We look forward to seeing all of our pandas back on April 10th! Please use this time to rest and recharge from all of the hard work students have been doing since winter break. We hope your family is able to enjoy some spring-like weather and get outside.
We also want to take some time to thank Mrs. DeSantis and Mrs. Wilhelm for the amazing One Book, One School Program! They worked so hard to ensure that all students had access to the story. Monday night we finished reading our book “Pie”. Following the reading, we made Chocolate Cream Pie together as a community. If you missed out and want to learn how to make Chocolate Cream Pie with Mr. Blount - here’s the instructional video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kq7kv7b-dY. Thank you to all the families that were able to join us for the nightly read aloud; we had an average of 60 families nightly!
Mr. Blount and Mr. Cook
Office Closed for Spring Break
Greenbriar West is closing the front office during spring break. If you have a concern that needs immediate attention, please contact the Region 5 office at 571-423-1150. If you’d like to leave a message, please call 703-633-6700 and your call will be returned (April 10th, 2023) when school resumes.
Eagle Scout builds Picnic Tables for GBW’s Panda Park!
We want to say a big thank you to the Eagle Scout Chris Crevoisier and his Troop 7369 from Chantilly, VA for helping to design, build, and install the 5 new picnic tables at Greenbriar West ES! Chris approached GBW with a few proposal ideas earlier in the year for his Eagle Scout Project, and we agreed on a project to build 5 new picnic tables to our Panda Park playground for more outdoor learning and outdoor dining spaces. Additionally, it is our hope that our GBW community will benefit from these tables in the evenings and on weekends. Under Chris's leadership, Troop 7369 helped build the tables and our GBW PTA help fund the project by paying for the wood, hardware, and other materials.
Chris & Troop 7369- thank you so much for this wonderful addition to our GBW community, and thank you again to the PTA for funding projects like these that help benefit our entire GBW community.

This will be a chance for families to take a self-paced walking tour to meet our GBW staff in person and to take a quick inside tour of our school.
Our GBW staff is looking forward to meeting each of your children, and we can’t wait to welcome you into our GBW family.
If you have any questions about the orientation or the registration process, please contact our registrar, Patty Li, at pli@fcps.edu.
If you do not have a rising Kindergartener but know of someone who does, (and lives in the GBW boundary), please feel free to forward this information to them.
LOST AND FOUND
We have a vast array of items that are lost and found. Please take time to review the tables in the lobby before spring break. Thank you!
Unexcused Absences
We are all so grateful that family travel and trips can once again take place as they did before the Covid pandemic.
As families are considering or planning trips for next year, we ask that you please refer to the 2023-2024 FCPS School Calendar and take your trips during scheduled school breaks.
Family trips taken during school days will be counted as “Unexcused Absences.” Excessive absences can additionally hurt our school’s accreditation status with the Virginia Department of Education. Most importantly, it creates a very difficult learning gap in a student’s education both academically and socially for all the days that are missed.
Again, we ask that families please access the 2023-2024 FCPS School Calendar and schedule your trips during school breaks. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our school counselors Megan McAndrew, msmcandrew@fcps.edu and Anne Flanagan ajflannagan@fcps.edu.

- The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.
- The hands-on portion is followed by an educational section that includes a PowerPoint presentation detailing the red flag props that the room contained and how it is indicative of – or used in - risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life. Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!
