Seeking Nominees for the 2023-2024 PTA Board
Nominations for the 2023-2024 PTA Board will be taken at our next PTA meeting on April 12. We are still seeking a nominee for Treasurer. If you are interested in learning more please reach out to Renee at president@marshallroadpta.org or Monica at treasurer@marshallroadpta.org.
Family Reading Challenge
The PTA is continuing our 5-week Family Reading Challenge! Throughout the challenge we will share with you some resources and activities to help diversify your home libraries and discover new books to help expand your child’s understanding of the world around them. This is part of the National PTA Family Reading Experience, sponsored by Office Depot OfficeMax.
This week we are focusing on avoiding stories with tokenism or stereotypical representation of a group (Goal 4 from the National PTA’s Family Guide to Selecting Diverse Books). Racial and ethnic identities vary widely, and no group of people should be represented as a token representative of diversity or with stereotyping in either text or visual representation. To explore this goal, for early elementary students, we recommend the book Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut by Derrick Barnes. For upper elementary students, we recommend the book When Stars are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed. We invite you to join us to learn and discuss more on this topic at our next PTA meeting on April 12.
Save the Date for Our Earth Day Celebration
The PTA will be hosting an Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 15, 9:00 am-1:00 pm. We would love to see you there! There will be many great activities to participate in. Compost Crew will provide information on composting; The Town of Vienna will answer questions on its recycling program; Noctiluna will help upcycle your old or damaged textiles; and MRES Bike Train leaders will give an overview of the Bike Train route and how to participate. We will also prep the Marshall Road gardens and grounds for spring, so plan to bring your gardening tools if you'd like to help! The community is welcome to bring a picnic blanket and either pack a lunch or purchase food from Empanadas Mendoza, Taqueira Sabrositos, or Ben & Jerry’s. Flyer
Bike Train Kicks Off after Spring Break
The Marshall Road Bike Train will kick-off again this Spring on Tuesday, April 11! The Bike Train departs Meadow Lane Park at 8:45 am. Students may meet at Meadow Lane or join the Bike Train along the route. If you have a student joining the Bike Train, please consider signing up to chaperone some of the rides! See all Bike Train details here or check out this flyer.
If your student rides in the morning, please make sure they know how they are getting home in the afternoon and where they will meet you (at school, at home, or at Meadow Lane Park). If they normally take the bus, you must inform the MRES office that they will be biking home (email jfheflin@fcps.edu).
Plastic Grocery Bags Needed for Food4Thought
If you have plastic grocery bags (clean and in good condition), please bring them to the bin in the MRES lobby. They will be used to pack weekend food packs for the F4T program.
Come Celebrate the Rich Diversity of MRES
International Night is a long-standing tradition at Marshall Road—bringing together our students and their families for a night to remember. This annual event is an opportunity for our students to showcase their culture and heritage by hosting a country table that highlights their country of choice or heritage. By allowing our students to experience different cultures, we hope to foster a community of understanding and appreciation for one another. Our collective diversity is what makes the MRES community as welcoming and united as it is!
On Friday, April 28 from 5:30-7:30 pm, you will have a chance to:
- Experience the rich culture and diversity of our student community
- Build more connectivity to our MRES community and much more
International Night is one of our largest events of the year and you won’t want to miss it! Come wearing traditional attire if you so desire. To learn more about IN, visit https://marshallroadpta.memberhub.com/w/IntNight.
To host a country table, participate in the multicultural talent show, or the Parade of Nations: sign up here! Questions? Email Ridaa or Yesenia at internationalnight@marshallroadpta.org.
Thank you for helping us build connectivity and community at Marshall Road. We look forward to seeing you later this spring!
