Principal's Message

Dear Families,

A number of things to celebrate over the past week:

  • Congratulations to our 6th grade students who participated in the All-County Chorus festival last Saturday, they were awesome!
  • Congratulations to our students who participated in the afterschool drama club.  They had a performance this past week and did a great job!
  • Congratulations to one of our former DRES parents, Katy Malesky, who was recognized by the City of Fairfax as a "2023 Woman of Influence" .  Katy is instrumental in helping DRES students and families who are in need.
  • Congratulations to our 3rd grade teachers who were recognized by FCPS Instructional Services department for their hard work and student achievement results with reading instruction.

As a reminder, our school office will be closed next week for spring break.  I will be traveling to Myrtle Beach, SC with my son's high school baseball team.

I hope all of our students, families and staff have a safe and enjoyable spring break!

Understanding Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) Reports

Grade 3-8 students across Virginia took VGA tests in fall and winter of 2022-23. FCPS mailed score reports to families earlier this month that combine Fall and Winter results. When viewing students’ scores, it is important to keep in mind that there is no “passing” or “failing” for VGA tests and that each vertical scaled score reflects performance on a single day. VGA results should be used alongside other available data for a more complete picture of students’ academic progress. Also keep in mind that the VGA asks questions from the entire curriculum, including some standards that will not be taught until later in the school year.

The FCPS VGA Score Reports webpage now includes a section on Understanding VGA Results, featuring Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). This section will continue to be updated throughout the spring to address incoming questions and to reflect additional state guidance as it is released.

The feature will help those with accessibility needs, such as visual impairments, dyslexia, or other difficulty reading large amounts of online text. The text-to-speech feature is available for English, Spanish, and Korean. Learn more and try out the new feature.

Positivity Project (P2)

Dear Families,

When we return from Spring Break our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.

Fairness is the product of moral judgement -- the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

For individuals, cultivating the character strength of fairness is correlated with highly desirable developmental outcomes. It helps people to become trustworthy friends, responsible citizens, and generally moral people.

To practice and encourage the character strength of fairness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Have a wonderful week!
