1.  A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Community,

Wow! Spring has sprung! Whether you have been enjoying the Cherry Blossoms or just recently celebrated Opening Day for the Washington Nationals or are just looking forward to enjoying the warmer weather, spring brings us a sense of excitement and new energy.  Next week is spring vacation for all FCPS students and staff.  Our Chantilly office will be closed from April 3-7 and will re-open when school resumes on April 10. On behalf of the entire CHS faculty and Staff, I wish you a restful and recharging break full of all the activities and people you love.

It is a joy to connect with our Charger community. Here are a few highlights from the past week:

Students:

  • Spring Spirit Week has been a big success! It is wonderful to feel the enthusiasm in the building and the anticipation for spring break. Staff and students alike enjoyed dressing up throughout this week.
  • The Cake Boss event sponsored by CHS Leadership was a HUGE and tasty success. We have many talented Charger Bakers. I truly enjoyed the tasting.
  • Congratulations to the Chantilly Symphonic Winds, who are traveling up to Indianapolis this week to participate in the Music For All National Concert Band Festival.  Their performance in Indianapolis is featured LIVE online via Media.  They will perform at 5:45pm EST Friday, March 31 in the Schrott Center for the Arts at Butler University.

Staff:

  • Our Chantilly faculty engaged in mini meetings over two days together and shared feedback on FCPS Strategic Plan and how to best support students across departments and programs. We had thoughtful student-centered conversations focused on the future.
  • Thanks to the CHS Social Club and Culinary Arts students and Chef Clay for an amazing lunch of a French Fry Bar with all the toppings.  It is always great to connect over a meal!

Community:

  • I had a wonderful conversation about the great things happening at CHS and opportunities for growth with several parents at my first Principals' Coffee this week. We talked about how we can enhance our connections and communications. One hot topic was how to ensure family access to student Schoology courses. Check out this video as a resource to help you support your students:

  • It was a pleasure to be invited and to attend Iftar at Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center this past Wednesday. I enjoyed connecting with many colleagues and students in our community and learning more about the Muslim faith and Ramadan.
  • Thank you to the many volunteers who made our Biology field trips such a success this week!  We appreciate your partnership and support.
  • April is the Month of the Military Child and Virginia’s Purple Up! Day is Wednesday, April 19. The FCPS Purple Up! t-shirt is available for order now through March 16 here!  Purple Up! FCPS!

I am looking forward to making many more Charger Connections in the coming weeks!

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations. You can do that through e-mail (atgoodloe@fcps.edu) , call 703-222-8100, or through the form located here. Please remember that if you do not include your information on the form, I will not be able to follow-up.

5.  CHS Performing Arts Presents:  The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime

Fifteen year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.

6.  Hidden in Plain Sight

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

The hands-on portion is followed by an educational section that includes a PowerPoint presentation detailing the red flag props that the room contained and how it is indicative of — or used in — risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life.  Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!

Join us Thursday, April 27th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Chantilly High School (Library).  Click here for more information.

7.  Returning from Spring Break - Covid Reminders

Over the past few weeks, identified COVID cases at CHS have decreased to a very low number. During the past two years, we’ve noticed an increase in cases after students return from school breaks. As a result, we have summarized what parents need to do if their student tests positive or is exposed to someone who tests positive during Spring break.

If your student tests positive over the break:

  • Email Brenda Silvia-Torma, COVID Case Manager at CHS and CA: bmsilviatorm@fcps.edu and provide the following information:
    • If yes, which sport? ___________________
    • If yes, when did the team last meet? _________________
    • If yes, which ones?_________________
    • If yes, when did the group last meet? _______________________
    • Name and student ID number: __________________________
    • Symptom start date: _________________________
    • Diagnosis date: _______________
    • Participation in CHS sports (Y/N)
    • Participation in CHS clubs/activities (Y/N)

Ms.Siliva-Torma will respond with a detailed explanation for how/when your student can return to school after break. She will also contact you with follow up questions, if needed.

11.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  Dr. Goodloe meets with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Kevin Diaz Velasquez has been very motivated throughout the 3rd quarter. He volunteers to read to the class and is an active participant in all classroom activities. He should be very proud of his efforts.  Mr. John Glufling
  • Aidan Driggs has been ON IT in Geometry. He is focused and attentive during instruction and is always eager to answer questions. His homework is completed with high quality, which translates to awesome assessment scores. Not only is he excelling in math, Aidan is kind and respectful! Aiden's teacher loves having him in class.  Ms. Hanna Ahn
  • Eduardo Ordonez is an extremely hard worker in Personal Fitness class. He comes into class every day with a positive attitude and pushes himself to get stronger each day. He always has a smile on his face and is such a pleasant young man to have in class.  Ms. Melissa Bibbee

He will be the first-generation college student in his family, and he wants to be a good role model for his younger siblings.  Ms. Betty Ablimit
  • Sebastian Rutherford deserves an award for the student that pushed themselves the most on the PACER test. The PE staff witnessed him continue to push through discomfort 8 extra lengths after he was at maximal exertion!  Mr. Kevin Boss
