How Executive Functioning Skills Improve Grades & Lower Stress

Wednesday, March 29th, 7:00 pm EDT

Click here to register for webinar

About this webinar – Students are often tired and stressed out but they don’t have to be. Executive functioning skills can turn things around.

Does your child ever:

  • Feel sleep-deprived?
  • Procrastinate even though it increases stress?
  • Does their homework but forgets to turn it in?

Executive functioning is what makes a student “good” at school, and fortunately it is a learnable skill!

WOODSON NEWS & EVENTS

Spring Break COVID Test Kit Distribution

If your family is planning to travel or attend large gatherings over spring break, and you would like to ensure your child is healthy before returning to school, students can obtain a test kit in advance of spring break.

Please note, testing is NOT required for students to return to school after break. However, you may want to test your student if they are symptomatic or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

COVID Kits will be distributed this week from the Main Office - two kits per student/household, on a first-come, first-served basis, until supplies are exhausted.

Portrait of a Graduate Learning Day

Thursday, April 13th will be the first Portrait of a Graduate (POG) learning day at Woodson. Students will be able to hear how the POG skills they learn in school are applied in the “real world.”  There will be speakers coming from a variety of fields including: music, event planning, forensic accounting, trades, climate change, government contracting, law, TV / radio, and the list goes on. Many local companies will be represented. Students will have a unique opportunity to explore various careers and see how what they are learning is applied after high school.

If you’re interested in participating as a speaker to share your career insights with students - contact pdisalvo@fcps.edu and kebenzinger@fcps.edu. Let them know if you prefer a small group (about 30 students), medium group (about 60 students), or large group (about 300 students), and which session/s work best for you.

Session one is 8:20-9:10, session two 9:20-10:10, session three 10:20-11:10. You are welcome at any or all of the sessions.

Be Aware of Testing Calendar

As we head into SOL and AP testing season, please take note of test dates as you plan doctor’s appointments, etc for your student.

Woodson Student Services

If your child would like to make a change to their course selections for next year, they must contact their counselor by March 31st. This is also the deadline to complete the Dual Enrollment Process for any DE class students may be taking. Additional information about advising can be found on our Academic Advising Padlet. Registration for summer classes can also be found on the Padlet.

Counselors welcome the opportunity to talk with students and parents regarding any questions or concerns about rigor in scheduling, and how best to achieve balance between academic goals and ambition with personal interests, wellness, and health. Please contact your student’s counselor if you have any questions.

Any student who requested an Academy class for next year will be notified by email (fcpsschools.net) of their enrollment status. Emails are expected to be sent out on March 31st.

The Student Services Padlets are always a great source of information and updates from Student Services! If you need additional resources to help with organization, time management, study skills, etc., you can find them through our Academic Supports Padlet.

Host families provide a bed, three meals a day, and a willingness to welcome a student into the normal rhythm and activities of their home. Compass USA will provide sightseeing trips on weekdays to Washington, D.C. for the French students and any interested host siblings. It’s an unforgettable summer experience!

WOODSON CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

Unicef Club

Student Peace Award

The Woodson High School UNICEF club was one of 27 recipients of a 2023 Student Peace Award of Fairfax County honored at a reception on Sunday, March 19th. Rep. Gerry Connolly introduced a Resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives listing all the recipients and recognizing their efforts as "building blocks of a more peaceful and tolerant world."

The UNICEF Club supports children in need around the world, defending their rights, and helping them live fulfilling lives. Sophia Huh, a junior, is the president of the club. When she entered high school, she wanted to find a club to get involved in, with the hope of building new friendships and also making a difference in the lives of others. “I found that place with the UNICEF Club,” said Sophia.

The student-led club--led by officers Sophia Huh, Katelyn Tran, Jacqueline Truong, and Roen Dioquino--works to fulfill UNICEF’s three pillars of education, advocacy and fundraising.

CAVS SPORTS

Girls Lacrosse

The JV Lady Cavaliers remain undefeated with a 10 to 1 victory against Langley, and an 11 to 7 win against Oakton last week.  The Varsity Lady Cavs struggled to win draw controls early which gave Oakton’s top scorers too many one-on-one opportunities to score, and Woodson lost 9 to 12.  Varsity returned to Pat Cunningham stadium Saturday to face the Langley Saxons.  Woodson’s turnovers and yellow cards in the first half kept the game close.  The Lady Cavs’ defense kept the momentum in the second half and Woodson came out victorious 12 to 11.  Goal scorers for Woodson included juniors Eva Lennon, Reese Cuviello, Alexandra Walrath, as well as seniors Genna Cooke and Mia Zganjar.

JV Lady Cavs have an upcoming Friday home game against Robinson.  Varsity has a Tuesday away game at Falls Church, a Wednesday home game against Battlefield, and a Friday home game against cross-town rivals Robinson.

Varsity Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball team raised its early season record to 3-1 with a 5-3 home victory over South County on Tuesday. Friday’s game at West Springfield was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up later in the season.

Highlights of the game against South County included a first inning RBI single to center field from Senior Elizabeth Schneider. Junior Syd Huffman fielder’s choice grounder to 3rd base platted Senior Sarah Banker, helping Woodson jump out to a 3-0 first inning lead. Later in the game with the score tied in the 5th inning, Senior Ally Geronime’s bases loaded walk broke the tie, forcing in Junior Cece Temple with the eventual winning run. Temple got the victory pitching the final 3+ innings keeping South County off the scoreboard. Woodson’s defense committed 0 errors and was led by Huffman making 6 plays at shortstop.

Update Your Emergency Care Information Through weCare@school

Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system, to parents/caregivers who have registered for their own parent account. weCare helps manage emergency medical information by allowing parents to enter and update their children’s medical data online at their convenience. That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive eNotify communications from the district and their child’s school. eNotify is the communications tool for FCPS emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closings and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent via email, text, and occasionally phone.

Learn more about updating your emergency care information.

High School Assessment and Grading Survey

Instructional Services is conducting a survey to gather perceptions and preferences around assessments and grading elements. FCPS high school students, their families, and high school-based staff will be surveyed about their current classes and how they feel about assessment, grading, and grading practices and policies. The survey results will be used along with information from student focus groups, research, best practices, and benchmarking to propose recommendations to the School Board later this spring.

Surveys were sent Monday, March 20, and the deadline to respond is Friday, March 31. For more information, contact Michael Gillespie in Instructional Services.
