Purple Up Day for our Military!
FCPS 2023 Purple Up! ~ April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices. FCPS is inviting all students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” by wearing purple on April 19th for military children.
We will be hosting our military families on the 19th of April in the cafeteria. Come join us at 8:15 a.m. in the cafeteria for 'Donuts with Dependents' and engage in a family map game. In order to plan, we ask that you help us plan by sharing your possible attendance. Let us know by completing this form.
Student Placement Input 2023-24
One of our important tasks is determining class placements for the next school year. The school staff works collaboratively to begin planning teacher and student assignments for next year. It is the task of the grade level teachers, specialists, and administration to determine distribution of teachers and students to optimally organize classroom assignments for next year. A variety of factors such as student personalities, friendships, and academic abilities are also considered as we create our new classes. Other factors impacting the decision-making process of student class assignments are new student enrollment and teachers moving to a new assignment.
Kent Gardens' families can assist us in determining class placement by sharing their insights about their child with respect to academic and behavioral information. Please note the following: We do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement. This includes hints that reference specific teachers. We cannot guarantee multiple friend requests nor exceptions for other students whereby there may be a conflict. That said, we do our best to ensure one friend so that your child feels comfortable during the school year. Completion of the form is optional: however, the deadline for any correspondence is April 21, 2023. Complete one form per child.

Family-Facing Curriculum for Core Content Being Added to Public FCPS Website
The curriculum overviews and unit standards from the planning and pacing guides have been posted on the FCPS public web and shared with the School Board. The goal is to provide families a comprehensive overview of what students are learning and when they are learning it.
An introductory paragraph on each grade level or course page includes the following statements: “The objectives and outcomes for each unit are common across FCPS and based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. The pacing by quarter and by week provides an example of how the curriculum can be organized throughout the year. Teacher teams may adjust the pacing or order of units to best meet the needs of students.”
Information will be updated at the start of each school year to reflect curriculum updates. To access the grade level and/or course web pages directly, first search for the level within the Academics page, select grade level or content, and click on Year at a Glance.
Understanding Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) Reports
Grade 3-8 students across Virginia took VGA tests in fall and winter of 2022-23. FCPS mailed score reports to families earlier this month that combine Fall and Winter results. When viewing students’ scores, it is important to keep in mind that there is no “passing” or “failing” for VGA tests and that each vertical scaled score reflects performance on a single day. VGA results should be used alongside other available data for a more complete picture of students’ academic progress. Also keep in mind that the VGA asks questions from the entire curriculum, including some standards that will not be taught until later in the school year. Last but not least, the VGA is an adaptive assessment. Thus, many times students will progress to more difficult levels which impacts the scoring as well. The VDOE will release more information as we go forward.
The FCPS VGA Score Reports webpage now includes a section on Understanding VGA Results, featuring Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). This section will continue to be updated throughout the spring to address incoming questions and to reflect additional state guidance as it is released.
SHARING THE CARING SPIRIT OF KGES
As a school, we are filled with wonderful teachers, staff, and support who help enrich our student's lives. Please consider taking a moment to fill out a FCPS CARES form for those you feel exemplify #KGPRIDE.
These responses will be shared with our staff and administration directly and are a wonderful way to let them know you care. As a school, as a community, we are #StrongerTogether and we appreciate all our teachers and staff do.
Come Join PTA Sponsored Activities!
TEACHER LOVE!
Our teachers and staff are truly the backbone of our school, and we want to shower them with love. The KGES Wellness Committee has shared that teachers love it when there is coffee/tea available, occasionally including a small snack for them in the lounge.
We would like to show #Teacher Love. You can bring in coffee/tea, snacks, bags of mini candies, whatever goodies you think might help sweeten their day. You can also help stack the staff lounge with paper plates/cups/napkins...etc. Please choose a slot to volunteer and drop off in the Staff Lounge by 8am on Wednesdays to show some love and support for our fabulous teachers and staff. Thank you in advance for supporting our school!
