A Note from Mrs. Burke

Dear Rocky Run Families and Students,

Well we have officially made it to Spring and we put our clocks forward, which had us losing an hour of sleep.  We have seen a big increase in tardies this past week with the change and I want to remind families that students need to be in class by 7:30am.  We aim to keep the kiss and ride line moving, but please take into consideration the time it takes to get through the kiss and ride line when planning your departure time from home.

Ramadan started on Wednesday, March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. We were fortunate that our families shared some of their traditions with us by bringing Warbat Bil Ashta and dates in honor of Ramadan.  We enjoy learning more about the various cultures that make up our Rocky Run community.

Yesterday we were able to welcome the new Principal of Rocky Run Middle School, Mr. Peter Kownacki.  I am honored to continue serving as Interim Principal until he starts on July 3 and I look forward to supporting Mr. Kownacki as he transitions to our school.  Please see the note below from Mr. Kownacki.

Have a great weekend.

Amanda Burke

Interim Principal

Dear Rocky Run Middle School Community-

I am humbled and excited to have been selected to serve as the next principal of Rocky Run Middle School. It has been a whirlwind couple of days for me and my family, not to mention the Rocky Run community! Yesterday, March 23 I had the pleasure of connecting with the faculty and staff of Rocky Run to talk about my educational “why” and vision for the stewardship of Rocky Run. As a former AP at RRMS it was great to see familiar faces and meet new friends. Tonight, I will be at Dulles Airport to send my own RRMS 8th grader and the cohort of Ram travelers off to England for the Warriner School exchange! It should be the trip of a lifetime for them.

As I said in my introduction to the staff yesterday afternoon, my previous stint working at RRMS changed me as an educator. It made me fall in love with middle school and realize that there’s magic in the middle! Each day, I see the power and influence of middle school, specifically RRMS, through my own daughter’s eyes. The supportive learning environment and the passion and commitment of each staff member is evident. From a parent’s perspective, I know that RRMS embodies the ideals that a community looks for in a school and I look forward to providing this same experience for each member of our community, including my rising 7th grade son.

Even though I won’t officially start at RRMS until 7/3, I will definitely be present throughout the coming months to learn about and engage with our amazing community. I plan to be in consistent communication with Ms. Burke and the other members of the admin team to lay the groundwork for a smooth transition this summer. I have the utmost confidence in the leaders of RRMS to end the school year on a positive note, especially considering the amount of change that has occurred in the past few months.

Outside of school, my family and I spend most of our time at soccer fields, basketball courts and swimming pools all over Virginia. I am an avid (and long suffering) UVA and DC sports fan. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, playing pickleball and going to the gym. I hope to see many of you in the community, and please feel free to say “hello” when you see me.

As always, thank you for your continued partnership and please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki
