Spring has sprung in our region! The cherry blossoms are in bloom with peak expected in the coming days. Let’s hope the March winds slow down enough to leave the flowers on the trees for our viewing pleasure as long as possible. Our nation’s capital looks beautiful this time of year. Go and enjoy it!

Spring break is approaching fast. As a reminder, in FCPS, we do not assign homework or large projects during spring break. Students also should not have tests or quizzes on the first two school days back from the break. We truly want our students to unplug, relax, and spend some quality time with family and friends.
We ended the week with some great news from our 8th grade civics classes. Recently, our students wrote letters to government officials to express their concerns regarding issues that they believed could be improved upon at the local, state, or federal level. Jacob W., one of Mr. Long’s students, wrote to President Biden. He was quite surprised today to learn that he received a letter back from the White House! (See our Twitter feed!) We also have students who will soon be meeting with both our Fairfax County and our City of Fairfax School Board Superintendents. It is great for our students to see that their voices are heard and do make a difference!
In closing, we began to open the library this week for our students who have begun fasting for Ramadan. Please speak with your fasting students about this to encourage them to go to the library during lunch if that is your desire. Should there be any concerns with this, we will give you a call to ensure everyone is in agreement about your expectations.

Our Staff Appreciation Week is rapidly approaching, May 8- May 12, and we are looking for your help! We are asking for donations of gift cards and/or gift baskets. We need to collect a total of 150 gift cards, to cover our entire staff. We plan to raffle off any gift baskets and other items, we acquire. Thank you in advance for your donations and generosity and thank you for helping make our Staff Appreciation Week a memorable one. Donations can be dropped off in the main office.
Another way to express your "thank you" for a staff member is by using the FCPS Cares Program. This program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees.
Fairfax County Public Schools provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system, to parents/caregivers who have registered for their own parent account. weCare helps manage emergency medical information by allowing parents to enter and update their children’s medical data online at their convenience. That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive eNotify communications from the district and their child’s school. eNotify is the communications tool for FCPS emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closings and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent via email, text, and occasionally phone.

Student Rights and Responsibilities and feedback Opportunities
Last week, we shared information about the Department of Special Services’ virtual meetings regarding proposed updates to the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Regulation for the 2023-24 school year. Does your student like inventing and/or robotics? If so, the Thinkabit Summer Camp is the place to be!
- This FREE camp will run from June 20-23, 2023 – 9AM-1PM at Katherine Johnson Middle School
- Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are invited to apply
- All supplies are provided, they just need to bring a lunch
- Students must have their own transportation to and from camp

Parent Information Line Available in Eight Language
Parents who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese can call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS and to receive support if they are having difficulty communicating with their children's schools due to a language barrier.
