Franklin Sherman Flash - March 20

We're Better Together

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

Last week was a busy week and we appreciate all of you who were here throughout the week, supporting our school community.  Book Fair week is always exciting and this was a highly successful event this year.  Proceeds from the book fair support our library programs.  Thanks to Ms. Essimi for her work to bring the book fair to FSES and the many volunteers who were here throughout the week.

Thursday night, at our PTA meeting, we had a great refresher on hands-on CPR. Did you know our teachers must be CPR trained as a part of their licensure and that our school has 2 AED machines?

Friday night the weather held off and we enjoyed another great family picnic.  We appreciate the many ways you as parents support and participate in our FSES activities.

Below, you will find information regarding Ramadan which begins this week.  For students who are fasting, the library is available as an alternate space during lunch or recess.  Please reach out to your child's teacher if you would like to ensure your child goes to an alternate location at these times.

Have a good week!

Ms. Quigley

Ramadan

This year, the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday, March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

Ramadan begins with a half “O Day” on March 22, followed by an O Day on March 23. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Lost and Found Clean-Up

All lost and found items will be moved to the front lobby from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Parents are welcome to visit the school during these hours to recover misplaced items.

After the event all remaining items will be donated.

Support International Night

Friday, May 5 @ 6-8 p.m.

International Night is a treasured Franklin Sherman tradition that celebrates our wonderfully diverse community. At International Night families host tables to showcase their culture -- from sharing bites of favorite recipes, to dressing in traditional clothing, to providing a fun game, to handing out flags/balloons/stickers, to sharing posters with fun facts...the possibilities are endless. Families tour the tables and get a taste of other cultures.

No matter where you’re from, please consider volunteering to make this year better than ever. Whether you host a table or assist with set up, your help in any capacity shows our enthusiasm for the diversity in our community.

Internet Content Filtering and Usage Reports for Parents

Did you know?  There is an online service that is free to FCPS parents who are interested in knowing more about their child’s internet activity on an FCPS device. Parents can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, which will provide a list of the top sites the child visited that week.

Additionally, if parents wish to get more detailed information, the weekly Parent Report offers parents the ability to self-sign-up to the free Internet Use Parent Portal. Parents who sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal can log-in any time to see a little more detail about their child’s internet browsing. The portal also offers the parent added ability to “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours on the FCPS device.

Learn more about this and other Digital Citizenship and Safety topics on the FCPS website.
