Ramadan

This year, the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday, March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. See the complete 2022-23 School Year Calendar.

Prayer/Reflection Opportunities

With Daylight Savings coming to an end, a need for group prayer opportunities at the end of each school day is no longer present.  Opportunities for prayer/reflection at Glasgow will still be available.   As we await more specific guidelines from FCPS around prayer/reflection rooms to be communicated, if students would like the opportunity for prayer/reflection during instructional time, their parents/caregivers must provide a written request for that accommodation.  If you would like to request that accommodation for your student, please send an email to me at vlpowell@fcps.eduand specify what time of day you are requesting.  I will respond in writing to your request.

No-Cost Mental Health Teletherapy for Students Starting April 10

FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to begin offering virtual mental health services to high school students via live video sessions. Starting Monday, April 10, parents/caregivers who have been struggling to find a therapist for their child or who notice changes in their child’s behavior will be able to connect them virtually with a licensed therapist.

Teletherapy services for students are short-term, evidence-based, and culturally-responsive. Teletherapy is available on any device, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Therapists will be locally-licensed clinicians; 50% of whom identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC); and 40% of whom are bilingual. More than 15 languages are available.

Hazel Health’s licensed therapists can help students who are experiencing:

  • Mood/behavior changes, lack of motivation, grief/loss.
  • Anxiety, worry, fears.
  • Bullying, sexual identity challenges, challenging peer and family relationships.
  • Academic stress.

The first step for parents is to provide information through an opt-in form. Visit FCPS’ Teletherapy webpage for details.

Glasgow Bands Receive Top Marks at District Band Assessment

This past weekend the Glasgow Bands participated in their District Band Assessment, and both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned ratings of SUPERIOR, which is the highest mark a group can be awarded. Additionally, our students made some Glasgow history as the Wind Ensemble earned a Superior rating, playing grade 4 music for the first time in recorded school history, and for only the 2nd time since 2002, both groups received a “straight superior” meaning, all four judges gave them a rating of Superior. This is a huge accomplishment for our band students, especially considering most of these students started band during the virtual school year.

Assessment is the equivalent of an SOL for music students. However, instead of taking a written test, they do what they practice in class and perform a concert of three pieces followed by sightreading! The music must be chosen from a prescribed music list, assigning pieces a grade level from 1 to 6. Grade 1 is music a beginning band would be able to play, and grade 6 is music only the very best high school and college bands could play well. For sightreading, students and directors are provided a brand new piece of music and given seven minutes of practice time (where they are allowed to do anything EXCEPT play their instruments!) and then they have a single chance to perform this new piece. Assessment is judged by experts in the music field and master teachers who assess student performance based on their Tone, Technique, and Musicality among other factors.

Please join us in congratulation our Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band students on their incredible accomplishments and success this past weekend at District Assessment!

Kiss and Ride

We have many families who choose to drop off and pick up students at school.  We ask that you please use the kiss and ride lane and do not double park in our parking lot or the kiss and ride lane to drop off or pick up students.  In order to keep the flow of traffic moving along and to maintain safety, we ask that you pull your cars up and stop at the locations our monitors direct to before allowing your child to exit your vehicle.  We often have a long line of traffic waiting behind you and we want everyone to get through the line quickly and safely.  Please be sure students have all of their belongings ready to exit car doors onto the sidewalk.   If you need to enter the building, please find a spot to park in our lot.  Most importantly, please maintain a safe speed - we have students and staff members who are crossing the street to enter our building. We want to be sure that everyone does their part to keep Glasgow  safe.  Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is April 3-7. We will be eager to welcome your children back in school on Monday, April 10. Their attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Collective Bargaining

The Fairfax County School Board approved a collective bargaining resolution at the March 9 regular meeting. The resolution means that FCPS can now bargain collectively with employees over terms and conditions of employment.  This development was made possible after the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation in 2021 that permitted local governments and school boards to allow collective bargaining for their employees. After this legislation, the School Board invited all certified employee associations to form a work group with division leadership to create the collective bargaining resolution to govern collective bargaining in FCPS. The work group worked for over 18 months to draft and reach consensus on a resolution. The draft resolution was presented to the School Board and made available to the public. The Board also held a public hearing and a work session. The resolution adopted by the Board had only limited revisions to the work group’s draft. I am so thankful for the hard work of the work group to reach this consensus resolution and pleased that FCPS can now move to the next stage of the process. Read more about collective bargaining in FCPS and see my remarks.
